Joel McCartney

Assistant Coach

McCartney, the Cougars have posted a 78-85 overall record and 31-49 mark in four years as members of the NSIC. The Cougars have made two postseason appearances in four years, earning berths into the NSIC Tournament in 2013 and 2014.  In January of 2016, McCartney was inducted into the Winthrop University Athletics Hall of Fame, where he was head coach from 2001-2006, earning five Big South Conference Championships and five NCAA Tournament berths.  In 2015, a young Cougars team started out the season 8-0 before finishing the season with a 13-16 record, including a 5-15 performance in NSIC play. The Cougars saw the development of four freshmen who were thrust into the lineup during their maiden collegiate campaigns.  Behind middle blockers Jordan Calef and Lexi Scott's stout blocking -- both finished top 10 in the NSIC and top 50 in NCAA D2 in blocks per set -- the Cougars were third in the NSIC and 20th in Division II with 2.41 stuffs per set.  The Cougars finished the 2014 season with a 17-14 record and made their second conseuctive NSIC Tournament, earning the No. 8 seed after an 11-9 league mark. The Cougars' five-set win over cross-town rival Augustana earned them the tiebreaker and final spot in the NSIC Tournament.  Outside hitter Emily Johnson led the Cougars with 398 kills to eclipse the 1,000 kills threshold with 1,094 in USF's NCAA Division II era. McCartney led USF to have the sixth-best attack percentage (.224)  and seventh-best block per set average (1.86) in the NSIC.  McCartney guided the Cougars to a 19-12 (10-10 NSIC) record in 2013, a five-win improvement from the previous season. USF also doubled its conference win total (5-15 in 2012) to finish 7th in the NSIC standings and earn the programs first-ever bid to the NSIC postseason tournament. USF got off to a 7-1 start and improved its hitting percentage for the third straight season, ranking sixth in the NSIC with a percentage of .226, an improvement of 11 points from the previous year. The Cougars notched a pair of signature wins in 2013, first battling back from two sets down to defeat rival Augustana College for the first time in more than 30 years. The Rally Cats appeared again in late October to pull off the biggest win in program history, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to stun the sixth-ranked Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs for USFs first-ever win against a NCAA Division II-ranked opponent.
