John Vining
Assistant Coach
Vining was named the mens and womens golf assistant coach on June 30, 2016. In the 2014-15 season, Vining assisted the mens team to a Summit League Championship. The Coyotes erased an 11-stroke deficit and passed two teams on the final day to claim the programs first championship. Vining has helped guide Sam Matthew, Alex Kline and Brenna Lervick to All-Summit League Team honors, while Janice Baumberger and Matthew earned Academic All-League honors. In 2015-16, Jordan Rykal and Lervick were named First Team All-Summit League. Vining has been part of the Coyote golf program since 2008-09. He started out his career as a member of the team and played for four seasons from 2008-12, with two of those seasons being under current head coach Nick Hovden. In 2013-14, Vining served as a graduate assistant before moving into a part-time assistant role from 2014-16. As a player, Vining was named to the American Sky All-Conference Academic Team and the All-Summit League Academic Team. He was voted on and received the Coyote Character Award during his senior season in 2012. Golf is a rich tradition in Vinings family. His grandfather, Tom Egan, is a member of the South Dakota Golf Association Hall of Fame. Vinings aunt, Jane Egan, played on the LPGA Tour and is a member of the New Mexico State University Hall of Fame. His father, Rich, played Division I golf at Texas Pan American. Vining is a native of Sioux Falls, S.D., and has coached four years of basketball at Sioux Falls Lincoln and worked for The First Tee of Sioux Falls (junior golf). Nick Hovden
Assistant Coach
Hovden enters the 2016-17 year in his seventh season as the South Dakota head mens and womens golf coach. Under Hovden, the USD men's team has earned five straight NCAA Public Recognition Awards, which is given to teams that rank within the top-10 percent of each sport based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR). This past season, Hovden coached senior Jordan Rykal and junior Brenna Lervick to accomplishments that hadnt happened since the Coyotes transitioned to the Division I level. Rykal recorded a three-round score of 199 and won the Derek Dolec Invitational, the lowest three-round score since USD made the jump to the D I level. He recorded two rounds of 66, the second-lowest round for a Coyote. His scoring average of 74.8 was the third lowest score since 2011. Rykal earned first-team all-Summit League honors. Lervick finished the season with a win-loss record of 157-8 (95%) verses Summit League opponents and a record of 670-51 (93%) in all tournaments. Her win-loss percentage, for the season, is the best for a Coyote in the Division I era. She led the team with nine top-10 finishes (out of 11 tournaments), she was in the top-5 eight times and was the runner-up three times. She recorded a scoring average of 74.9, which is the best scoring average for a Coyote since 2011. Lervick was a first-team all-Summit League selection. She placed third at the Summit League Championships this past year and received All-Tournament Team honors. Hovden coached the womens team to three runner-up finishes in the 2015-16 season. The Coyotes were second in the South Dakota Coyote Classic, the Bob Hurley Shootout and the South Dakota State Invite. The team also tied for third at the Creighton Classic and was fifth at the Saluki Invitational. On the mens side, USD tied for third at the UNO Invitational, was fourth at the Zach Johnson Invite, fifth at the Derek Dolec Invitational and sixth at the South Dakota Coyote Classic. Hovden led the Coyotes mens team to its first golf championship in the 2014-15 season and was named the Summit League Mens Golf Coach of the Year. At the championships, three golfers placed in the top-10. The team advanced to the NCAA Bremerton Regional in Washington at Olympic Course at Gold Mountain. The Coyotes placed 14th at the regional. Hovden has coached four golfers to all-Summit League Team honors with Sam Matthew and Lervick being named to the team two times. The list also includes Rykal and Alex Kline. Matthew and Janice Baumberger were named to Academic All-Summit League Teams. At the championships, Matthew and Lervick placed third in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
