Mike Hillyard
Head Coach
Hillyard directed the Eagles' men to a third-place finish in the USTFCCCA Program of the Year standings in 2013-14. His Eagles finished 11th at the NCAA II Cross Country Championships; 13th at the NCAA II Indoor Championships; and tied for 13th at the NCAA II Outdoor Championships. Mike Hillyard has directed the men's cross country team to 11 straight GLVC titles and 12 in the last 13 years. At the conference level, Hillyard has directed the men's cross country program to 11 consecutive GLVC titles and 12 in the last 13 years. He also has led the women's squad to seven of the last eight GLVC crowns, including the last five, and a total of 10 conference championships during his tenure. He directed both squads to a GLVC championship in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015; and the men's program to a seventh-place finish at the 2011 and 2014 NCAA II National Championships. In 2014, Hillyard's men's cross country team featured five All-GLVC runners as well as the GLVC Runner of the Year in Johnnie Guy and the NCAA II Midwest Region Runner of the Year in Tyler Pence. The two formed what was one of the top one-two punches in the nation. The 2014 season also marked the first time in program history that the Eagles have featured three All-Americans as Tyler Schickel joined Guy and Pence in earning the prestigious honor. The 2011 Eagles saw five men's runners earn All-GLVC and All-Midwest Region honors. Brendan Devine captured the individual title and Jordan earned All-America honors as the men recorded their third straight top-10 performance at the national meet, the longest such streak in the program's history. In 2010, Hillyard led an experienced men's squad to its seventh conference title in the last eight years and to the NCAA II Championships for the sixth consecutive year. His squad, which featured four All-GLVC performers as well as two All-Region runners and a pair of All-Americans, finished 10th at the NCAA II Championships. The USI women's cross country team has won 10 GLVC titles under Mike Hillyard's direction. Hillyard's 2009 men's squad dominated the GLVC as five runners went on to earn All-GLVC honors, while three runners captured All-Region accolades. Led by a pair of All-Americans, Hillyard's Eagles finished sixth at the NCAA II Championships, their highest finish since placing fifth in 1983. In 2008, Hillyard led his revamped men's squad to its fifth GLVC title in six years and to the NCAA II Championships for the fourth consecutive season. USI had a record eight All-GLVC performers despite losing his top four competitors from the 2007 squad. Hillyard led the 2007 men's squad to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA II Championships, marking the first top-10 finish for USI since 1997 and its fifth top-10 finish in the history of the program. A year earlier, Hillyard's squad overcame significant injuries to capture its second straight conference championship. In 2005, he directed the Eagles to one of the most dominating performances in GLVC history as the team placed six runners in the top 10 and finished with 26 points to better the combined score of the entire GLVC field. The 2003 conference title marked the first time since 1991 that the Eagles' men's program had won the GLVC Championship and the first time since 1989 that the team had won the conference title outright. Under Hillyard, the women's squad has captured 10 GLVC titles since 1997. Combined with the men's squad, USI has accounted for eight of the 10 times in GLVC history that the same school has captured both the men's and women's conference championships in the same season. Hillyard also directed the women's program to the 1999 Great Lakes Regional Championship and to top-10 national finishes in 1998, 1999, and 2015. From 2011-15, Hillyard's Eagles earned a combined 21 All-GLVC honors and eight All-Midwest Region accolades. His 2009 squad dominated the field, placing seven runners on the All-GLVC squad. The women have qualified for 10 NCAA II Championship appearances under Hillyard's guidance and have had seven All-Americans. Hillyard's women's squad has produced five GLVC individual titles. Heather Cooksey captured the GLVC individual title in 2004 and 2005, while Allison Shafer won the GLVC championship in 2006. Mary Ballinger won the conference title in 2009 and Jackie Henderson was the GLVC champion in 2011. The recognized Hillyard as the Great Lakes Region Women's Coach of the Year in 1999 after leading the women's squad to the NCAA II Great Lakes Region championship. On the track, Hillyard's Eagles have excelled both individually and as a team. He has directed the women's program to three top-10 finishes at the NCAA II Outdoor Championships and three top-15 finishes at the NCAA II Indoor Championships. Under Hillyard's direction, 21 women have competed at the NCAA II Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In the last 12 years, 16 athletes have earned a total of 42 All-America awards, including Heather Cooksey's national championship in the 3,000 meters at the 2004 Outdoor Championships, the first by any female in any sport at USI; Candace Perry's national championship in the long jump at the 2005 Outdoor Championships; and Mary Ballinger'snational championship in the steeplechase at the 2009 Outdoor Championships. Hillyard, who took over the tradition-rich men's program left by legendary USI and GLVC Hall of Fame Coach Bill Stegemoller, has guided 15 student athletes to a total of 58 All-America awards in cross country and track and field. Johnnie Guy, the 2014 NCAA II champion in the 10,000 meters, accounted for 16 of those All-America honors, while Tyler Pence, the 2015 NCAA II champion in the indoor 5,000 meters as well as the outdoor 10,000 meters, accounted for nine All-America awards. In track and field, Hillyard has seen 35 of his student athletes win 57 conference titles (51 individual and six relays). He has directed 18 men's competitors to the NCAA II Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Hillyard was named the NCAA II Midwest Region Coach of the Year for outdoor track & field by the USTFCCCA in 2015. Hillyard was a member of the USI cross country team and ran the steeplechase in track in 1992, earning All-America honors with a fifth-place performance at nationals. He placed 34 in the 1991 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. Mike Hillyard has directed the men's cross country team to 11 straight GLVC titles and 12 in the last 13 years.
