Proshek starts his seventh season as head coach in 2016. He's guided the Tommies to four NCAA tournament berths in the last five seasons.  His 2011-12 team won the MIAC Championship -- UST's first since 1980. That team advanced to the national meet for the first time and missed the 36-hole cut by one stroke with a 16th-place finish out of 41 teams. Freshman Alex Kapraun received All-America honors. The Proshek-led Tommies returned to the NCAA playoffs in 2012-2013 after St. Thomas finished second at the conference meet and were given an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships. The team missed the cut after finishing 19th out of the 41 participating teams. Alex Kapraun repeated as an All-American after finishing 27th individually at nationals. The 2015-16 Toms lost the 54-hole conference tournament by a single stroke, but were ranked first nationally for part of the season after winning the prestigious 18-team GolfWeek Preview tournament in Florida. The Toms topped 13 nationally-ranked teams and erased a 16-stroke deficit on the final day. They went on to share fifth at nationals led by conference medalist All-America Pete Sienko, just a sophomore, and honorable mention All-America Nck Nielsen. Proshek, a Tommie assistant coach since 2006, replaced Dave Lepp, who resigned after four seasons due to additional duties as UST's athletic facilities manager. A 1979 St. Thomas graduate with a bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education, Proshek has coached in many capacities. Previously, he was head boys' golf coach at Shakopee High. He also coached four years of girls' varsity basketball at St. Louis Park High, and at various levels of boys' basketball at New Prague High. He was the general manager at the New Prague Golf Club for 25 years and retired in 2004. He works part-time at Brackett's Crossing Country Club in Lakeville. He's also worked as a substitute teacher at various Catholic grades schools; has refereed high school football for 19 years; works part-time at Encompass Inc (forensic engineering) in Eden Prairie. He's married to Patty Proshek and resides in Shakopee. His son Nate lives in New Prague; his daughter Morgan lives in Savage; and his stepson Rob Svobodny and stepdaughters Alix Svobodny and Danielle Johnson live in Minnesota. He has two grandchildren.
