Shane Shewmake

Head Coach

Shewmake is 401-249 in 13 seasons, including 200-121 against ASC opponents. He collected his 400th career victory on May 7, 2016, as the Comets downed Concordia Texas, 12-8, in the ASC Tournament. In 2015, Shewmake led the Comets to fifth ASC title game, accomplishing the task from the loser's bracket after dropping an opening round game. UTD rolled off four straight wins in elimination games, three by a single run, before falling to Texas-Tyler, 6-5, in the league's title game. In 2012, Shewmake led the Comets to their first outright ASC East Division title in program history as UTD hosted the first round of the ASC Tournament for the second straight season. The Comets posted a 28-15 overall mark in Shewmake's 11th season at the helm and won the ASC East with a 16-8 mark. In 2011, the Comets made their fourth appearance in the ASC title game, also advancing to the championship contest in 2003, 2004 and 2006. That season, UTD hosted the ASC Championship Tournament for the second time in program history. Shewmake watched his 2007 squad have one of its best seasons in program history. The Comets finished as the top seed in the ASC East Division and earned the right to host the conference tournament. That same squad was ranked in the national Top 30 Division III poll, and was awarded its first invitation to the NCAA Division III West Regional tournament. The Comets, who finished with a 34-13 overall record, advanced to the regional semifinals before being eliminated. He earned ASC East Division Coach of the Year honors in 2004 after his team won its first divisional championship and was ranked as high as No. 11 in the national Division III poll, finishing with a 33-8 overall record. In his 14seasons, he has coached over 120 all-conference players as well as four ASC Players of the Year, two ASC Pitchers of the Year and a trio of ASC Newcomer of the Year. A native of Clyde, Texas, Shewmake came to UTD after spending three-plus seasons as an assistant with the baseball program at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. Prior to that, he was the head baseball coach at Eastfield College in (Mesquite, Texas) from 1993-97. Shewmake began his collegiate playing career at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, and also played at Eastfield College and Arkansas State University. He earned his BS degree from Arkansas State in 1992, and a Master of Science from East Texas State University.

Travis Graves

Head Coach

Travis Graves was named the head coach of the UT Dallas baseball team after spending seven seasons as an assistant. Since joining the Comets in July 2018, UTD has gone 184-94 and won back-to-back American Southwest Conference titles in 2021 and 2022. Graves coached two All-Americans, 10 All-Region selections and  53 All-American Southwest Conference picks. A native of Mesquite, Graves came to the Comets after spending one season as assistant coach and recruiting coach at NCAA Division II Delta State University. In 2018, Graves was part of a coaching staff that led the Statesmen to the Gulf South Conference title with a 42-11 overall record. Prior to DSU, Graves was the associate head coach at Dallas College-Eastfield, spending six seasons in that capacity with the Harvesters. While at Eastfield, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program and also served as the recruiting coordinator. Additionally, Graves made summer stops in the Coastal Plain League, spending a season each as an assistant coach with the Martinsville Mustangs (2015) and the Savannah Bananas (2016) before being named the head coach of the Florence Red Wolves in 2017. A product of Horn High School, Graves began his playing career as an All-American catcher at local Eastfield before transferring to the University of Southern Mississippi, where he led the Eagles to the NCAA College World Series. While at USM, he was listed on the Johnny Bench Award List as a senior and led the squad to the Conference USA championship. Following his collegiate days, Graves returned to Eastfield for two seasons as an assistant coach for the Harvesters, helping mentor the 2011 NJCAA Division I National Champions to a 40-22 overall record. Graves then headed back to Hattiesburg to serve as a graduate assistant with USM.  Graves collected his bachelor's degree from USM in Interdisciplinary Studies with minors in both History and Sport Coaching in 2010 while earning his master's degree also from Southern Miss in Sport Management in 2012.

Grant Freels

Assistant Coach

Grant Freels joined the UT Dallas baseball staff as an assistant coach in October 2025. Freels previously spent six seasons at Panola College in Carthage, Texas, where he compiled 155 wins as an assistant coach from 2017-23. While with the Ponies, he coached two conference Player of the Year winners, one Pitcher of the Year, one All-American, more than 30 all-conference selections, more than 50 NCAA Division I signees and more than 100 four-year collegiate players. Freels also guided five former players who reached Triple-A or Double-A level of Minor League Baseball. As a player, Freels spent two seasons as a left-handed pitcher at Tyler Junior College, where he helped the Apaches to the 2014 NJCAA National Championship. He then transitioned into coaching as a student assistant at Texas A&M University in College Station, where he spent three seasons with the Aggies' staff and was part of three NCAA Super Regionals and one College World Series appearance.  Freels earned his associate's degree from TJC and went on to receive a B.S. in Sports Management from TAMU in 2017.
