Nick McIntyre
Assistant Coach
McIntyre is entering his seventh season as a full-time assistant after having worked a volunteer assistant in 2009. McIntyre works with all aspects of the program, but his main responsibilities are serving as the hitting coach and infield instructor. Under McIntyres guidance, a trio of Rocket infielders have made All-MAC honors on eight occasions. Nick has such a great knowledge of the game and hes sharing his experiences as a player in college and in pro ball with our players, head coach Cory Mee said. He works with our infielders every day, and you can really see their improvement. In 2015, junior INF Deion Tansel was UTs most consistent hitter. Tansel led the squad with a .324 average and earned first-team All-MAC recognition. Toledo was consistent in the field last spring, registering a .967 fielding percentage, tied for the fourth-best mark in the MAC. UTs .967 fielding percentage ranks tied for third-best in school history, surpassed only by a .976 mark in 1976 and a .969 tally in 2013. UT also turned 43 double plays, tied for second most in the league. The catalyst of many of those double plays, Tansel, was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year. In 2013, Grogg finished second in the MAC with a .357 batting average, followed by senior OF Ben Hammer with a .333 mark, seventh-highest total in the league. UT was the only squad to have two players rank in the MACs Top 10 in hitting. Grogg also led the charge on the bases, swiping a league-best 36 bags, most in school history in a single season. He averaged 0.68 thefts per contest, sixth-best nationally. As a team, Toledo hit a conference-best .289 with 289 runs (5.0 rpg) scored on 574 hits (9.9 hpg). The Rockets also finished first in the league in hit-by-pitch (single-season school record 86), as well as ranking second in hits (574) and sacrifice hits (67) and third in stolen bases (78). UT was also excellent defensively in 2013, registering a league-best .969 fielding percentage. The Rockets tallied 1,520 putouts, second-highest mark in school history in a single season, against only 69 errors in 58 games. The Midnight Blue & Gold also turned a conference-best 49 double plays. Toledos .969 fielding percentage stands second-best total in school history, surpassed only by a .976 mark set during the 1976 campaign. In 2012, McIntyre helped Toledo capture its first MAC West Division title in school history. The Rockets 19-8 (.704) MAC record equaled their best mark since the conference went to three-game series prior to the 2004 campaign. Overall in 2012, UT sported a 30-27 ledger and secured a spot in the MAC Tournament for a fourth-straight season. Individually, senior 2B Joe Corfman and junior 1B/DH Matt Delewski garnered first-team All-MAC recognition. Corfman paced the squad with a .333 average, while Delewski was close behind with a .306 mark. Corfman finished tied for seventh in the MAC and seventh in Toledo record books in hits in a single season. The two-time first-team all-league selection wrapped up his illustrious career first in UT annals in hits (261), doubles (54), second in runs scored (177) and total bases (375), tied for fifth in RBIs (134) and 10th in batting average (.329,). Defensively, UT was very consistent in the field and posted a .964 fielding percentage. The Rockets tallied 1,450 putouts against only 76 errors. Individually, senior SS Chris Dudics received second-team All-MAC accolades. Dudics wrapped up his prolific career first in UT annals in hits (254), third in batting average (.353), seventh in runs scored (134) and eighth in total bases (322). In 2010, Toledo experienced one of its best seasons in school history, finishing 34-22 overall and 19-8 in the MACs West Division. UT registered its first 30-win season since 1999, and the Midnight Blue & Golds 34 wins tied for second most in school history. The Rockets MAC ledger was the programs best conference mark since posting a 23-9 (.719) record in the 1999 campaign, and UTs league-win total was the second most in school history. Toledo enjoyed a record-breaking year offensively, setting school marks for hits (679), runs (431), doubles (150), RBIs (393), total bases (1,043) and at-bats (2,068). In addition, the Rockets batting average (.328) and home run (62) total rank second in the schools single-season record book. UT was also excellent defensively in 2010, establishing school records in assists (670) and double plays (63). Individually, Corfman and Delewski earned first-team All-MAC honors, while junior SS/CF Chris Dudics received second-team all-conference recognition. Dudics was fourth in the MAC with a .391 average, while Corfman and Delewski are sixth and seventh with .383 and .377 averages, respectively. In McIntyres first season, Toledo experienced a respectable campaign, tallying a 24-30 overall mark and a 14-12 ledger in the MAC West Division. The Rockets finished a close second to Ball State in the division standings, equalling the sixth-most conference wins in UT annals. The Midnight Blue & Gold played its best baseball at the end of the season and advanced to the finals of the MAC Tournament for the second time in school history. Their late-season run came to an end with a setback to eventual tourney champion Kent State. Individually, he helped mentor sophomore OF Dan Sherwood and Dudics to MAC All-Tournament Team honors. McIntyre came to Toledo following an outstanding career as a four-year starter at Purdue (2000-03) and graduated with a degree in secondary history education. He was a multi-dimensional player for the Boilermakers and started games at catcher, second base and in the outfield. He appeared in 208 career contests and accumulated a .320 average (242-for-756) with 142 runs scored, 49 doubles and 144 RBIs. A 2003 Academic All-Big Ten honoree, McIntyre wrapped up his four years in West Lafayette, IN ranked fourth in school history in hits, doubles and at-bats, as well as tied for seventh in RBIs and eighth in runs scored and total bases (344). After graduation, McIntyre was selected in the 20th round of the 2003 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Detroit Tigers. He spent the 2003 season with the Oneonta Tigers in the New York-Penn League, before playing the next two years with the West Michigan Whitecaps in the Midwest League (Low A). He was named the Detroit Tigers Minor League Player of the Month for June of 2005 as well as the Topps Midwest League Player of the Month. McIntyre finished the 2005 season with a .303 average, eighth-best in the league, with 30 doubles and seven home runs. In 2006, McIntyre was elevated to the Lakeland Tigers (High A) in the Florida State League and also spent time with the Erie Seawolves (AA) in the Eastern League. He led Lakeland with a .283 average, 11 two-base hits and seven round trippers. McIntyre is married to former Boilermaker golfer and Sylvania, OH native Heather Zielinski. The couple has two daughters, Mia (5) and Morgan (2).
