Jamie Broce

Assistant Coach

Broces initial experiences as a head coach have been quite successful as well, as he has guided Toledo to a top-three finish at the MAC Championships in three of his first four seasons and five team tourney titles. Last year, Toledo claimed the team title at the season-opening Notre Dame Kickoff Challenge. The Rockets shot a 36-hole score of 567 (282-285) to capture the team crown at the second-annual event. UTs 36-hole total is the lowest in school history, surpassing the previous low mark of 568 during the opening two rounds at the NYX Hoosier Invitational on April 11, 2015. Toledo dominated the competition with three golfers in the Top Four and six in the Top 10 to coast to a 12-shot victory. Individually, senior Otto Black was named first-team All-MAC for a second-straight year. Black was also one of 10 individuals selected to participate in the NCAA Kohler Regional. The 2015-16 PING All-Midwest Region Team honoree became only the second Rocket to compete in a NCAA regional as an individual, and his appearance marked the third time in the last four years UT was represented in a regional. The four-team All-MAC recipient finished in the Top 10 in six events throughout the year, highlighted by a pair of runner-up finishes at the Notre Dame Kickoff Challenge and the Firestone Invitational. In the classroom, senior Thomas Shindler, sophomore Colin Joseph and sophomore Stephen Watts garnered Academic All-MAC recognition. The Rockets finished tied for second in the league for the most academic recipients, trailing only Miami with four. In addition, Toledo registered a school-record 3.759 cumulative grade-point average during the Spring 2016 semester. The Rockets broke the all-time UT record of 3.714 set by the womens golf team during the Fall 2015 semester. All seven student-athletes tallied a 3.3 GPA or higher led by freshman Spencer Shoemaker with a perfect 4.0 mark. Freshman Cameron Mills, freshman Jamie Knipe, Shindler, Joseph and Watts also earned spots on the Universitys Deans List (3.5 GPA or higher). UT has now posted team GPAs above 3.25 in eight of the last 10 semesters under Broce.  During Broces third year at the helm of the UT program, the Midnight Blue & Gold fell only eight strokes short of its first conference title since 2004 and finished runner-up at the MAC Championships. Senior Chris Selfridge was named the MAC Golfer of the Year, becoming the second Rocket to earn the leagues top honor. Black joined Selfridge on the first-team All-MAC squad, making the Rockets the only team to have more than one golfer collect first-team all-league accolades. Selfridge was tabbed first-team All-MAC for the third-straight year, while Black earned first-team laurels for the first time after being selected second-team all-conference the previous two years. Selfridge also became only the third player in school history to garner first-team all-league recognition on three occasions, joining Ted Ossoff (193, 74, 75) and Brad Heaven (2001, 02, 03, 04). Selfridge led the MAC with a career-best 72.4 stroke average and was ranked as high as No. 98 in the World Amateur Golf rankings, while Black finished fourth in the conference with a collegiate-low 73.6 average. Selfridge, who earlier in the spring captured medalist honors with a collegiate-low six-under par 208 at the Talis Park Challenge, was also selected to participate in an NCAA Regional on an individual basis for the second time in the last three years.  As a team, the Rockets posted four Top 5 finishes in 2014-15, culminating with a championship at the Georgetown Invitational. UT took advantage of freshman Stephen Watts, Selfridge and Black finishing in a third-place tie at the Georgetown Invite to post a sizable 14-stroke advantage over the competition.  Individually, four student-athletes were named MAC Golfer of the Week on seven occasions, including Selfridge who captured the leagues top honor a school-record four times. In addition, senior Mike Lancaster and Selfridge was selected to the Academic All-MAC Team. In Broces second year, the Rockets placed third at the 2014 MAC Championships and missed the second spot by only three strokes. Selfridge was named first-team All-MAC and Black was selected second-team all-league. In addition, junior Nate Gonring and Selfridge was tabbed to the Academic All-MAC Team. Prior to the conference championships, Black won his first collegiate tournament and helped propel Toledo to a team victory at Ball States Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational. Black was the only individual to finish under par in the event with a career-best one-under par 209, finishing five strokes in front of the nearest competitor.  In his rookie campaign, Broce guided Toledo to a second-place showing at the 2013 MAC Championships. A pair of Rockets earned all-conference accolades with Selfridge receiving a first-team selection and Black being tabbed for second-team laurels as well as MAC Freshman of the Year honors. Selfridge also became the first UT golfer to participate in the NCAA Regionals on an individual basis as he qualified for competition at the Columbus regional. During Toledos final 2012 fall tourney, the Rockets won the Georgetown Intercollegiate and Selfridge captured his first collegiate title with a career-low five-under 208. Toledo edged second-place Notre Dame by two strokes, while Selfridge finished ahead of Eastern Michigans Brian Churchill-Smith by one stroke. Prior to arriving in Toledo, Broce spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana University where he helped the Hoosiers compile an impressive track record. Indiana qualified for the NCAA Regionals each season during his tenure, including a second-place showing at the 2012 Big Ten Championships. IU was also ranked among the Top 40 nationally and received special academic recognition from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent in the country in Academic Progress Rate (APR). The Hoosiers picked up four tournament titles in 2011, as well as nine top-five finishes, after winning a pair of events and posting a trio of top-5 team finishes in 2010. During his first season, Indiana cracked the national top-10 rankings for much of the year, ascending as high as No. 4 in the country. The Hoosiers also won two team titles that season, winning the inaugural Big Ten Match Play Championship and adidas Hoosier Invitational, a tourney IU won by a whopping 27 strokes over the second place team.  A 2010 Ball State Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Broce posted a school-record 73.6 stroke average and concluded his BSU career by earning GCAA Third-Team All-America, MAC Player of Year and MAC Sportsman of Year honors as a senior with a program-best 71.7 average. As a junior, he received the Ben Hogan Award (as the nations top golf scholar-athlete) after carding a 72.8 mark, the second-best average in school history. A three-time All-MAC and Academic all-league honoree, Broce also shared medalist honors at the conference championship in his sophomore campaign. A cum laude graduate with a 3.71 cumulative grade-point average, Broce was a 1999 First-Team At-Large Academic All-American and a two-time GCAA Academic All-America Scholar recipient (1998 & 1999). He captained the Cardinal golf team as a junior and senior en route to winning six college tournaments, including a school-record tying four in 1998-99.  Broce garnered three top-four finishes while playing on the Nationwide Tour (2005-07) and also was a part of the NGA Hooters Tour (2002-04, 2008). In 2000, Broce qualified and played in the PGA Greater Milwaukee Open. Last fall, Broce represented Team USA against Great Britain and Ireland at the 27th PGA Cup, the premier international competition for club professionals between the PGA of America and The Professional Golfers Association. Broce was one of 10 members of Team USA and competed for the Llandudno International Trophy at the CordeValle Golf Club. Broce played well at the event and finished with a respectable 1-2-1 win-loss ledger. In the four-ball competition, Broce and teammate Bob Sowards secured a convincing 8&7 win to match the tourney-record victory margin set in 1990. Broce also qualified for the 2014 PGA Championship after a runner-up showing at the PGA Professional National Championship in Myrtle Beach. On the prep level, Broce captured the state title as a freshman for Ben Davis High School before posting a runner-up finish as a senior. He also won the Indiana Boys Junior Title in 1992 and 1995. A co-founder of the Blair/Broce Junior Golf Academy in LaPorte, IN, Broce possesses several years of golf instruction experience. He has served as an instructor at golf clinics hosted by the Nationwide and NGA Hooters Tours, in addition to providing private golf lessons.  Broce and his wife Darci have one daughter, Peyton (17) and one son, Preston (13).
