Danny Rowland
Head Coach
Rowland, who was four times named coach of the year during UVa-Wises time in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, will begin his 25th season as mens tennis head coach and 23rd year leading the womens tennis program when the two teams take to the courts this fall. While at the helm of the programs, Rowland has led his teams to six National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) regional appearances and has taken the womens team to the NAIA national tournament twice. Heading into the 2016-17 season, Rowland has compiled a total of 280 wins between the two programs and holds a 174-140 record on the women's side. Rowland recorded his 250th career win as a head coach at UVa-Wise during the Cavaliers inaugural season in the Mountain East Conference, a 5-4 mens home victory against West Virginia State in 2014. Last season, Rowland led the Cavalier mens team to an 11-9 overall record and the first MEC tournament match victory in either mens or womens program history, a thrilling 5-4 first-round win over Fairmont State. Securing the No. 4 seed in the MEC tournament, the Cavs 11-win season was among one of the best for the head coach. Rowland guided the men's team to a program-best 13-2 record during the 1999 campaign. The UVa-Wise women claimed the 2006 AAC tournament title and hosted the NAIA Region XII tournament before falling to regional winner Indiana-Southeast. That season the Cavs finished with an overall record of 15-5, one the best marks by the womens team in program history. UVa-Wise has advanced to the MEC Womens Tennis Tournament every season since joining the league in 2013. Rowland is a 1984 graduate of then Clinch Valley College and is the co-owner of Impressions Inc. in downtown Norton; he resides in Wise.
