Head Coach
Glorius' second season. Under Glorius' tutelage in 2013-14, the Cavaliers advanced six divers to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships, while JB Kolod qualified for the NCAA Championships. Kolod became the first Cavalier to make a championship final at the NCAA meet, placing seventh on 3-meter. Kolod also was the first diver from UVa to score on two different boards, finishing 10th on platform. Overall, three school records fell in Glorius' first season. Before Charlottesville, Glorius came to UVa after four seasons at Denison University, where he was named the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Diving Coach of the Year. Glorius helped elevate the Big Red's diving program to new levels over his four years in Granville, Ohio, aiding Denison's men to the first two national championship teams in program history (2011, 2012). In 2013, Glorius mentored Ben Lewis to the NCAA Division III Championship on the 1-meter boards and Gabe Dixon to a second-place finish on the 3-meter. In four years at Denison, Glorius guided the Big Red to 17 All-America diving performances and was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Diving Coach of the Year six times, including three on the women's side (2010, 2011 and 2013) and three on the men's side (2011-13). Glorius came to Denison after spending all of 2008 and part of 2009 as the head coach and director of the Thunderbird Diving Club in Cincinnati.In addition to running the Thunderbird club team, Glorius also coached the diving teams at Cincinnati Moeller, Indian Hill, Mariemont and Madeira high schools. Prior to starting the Thunderbird Diving Club, Glorius was a part of the Tri State club in Cincinnati, Ohio where he worked with elite international divers who represented the United States at meets in both China and England. Glorius graduated from Miami University in 1997 with a degree in anthropology. He dove for both Illinois and then Miami University, where he helped MU win the 1997 Mid-American Conference Championship. Augie Busch
Head Coach
Busch had previously been the head coach of Houston's women's squad for two seasons. In three seasons under Busch's guidance, the Cavalier women have won three-consecutive ACC Championships and UVA has posted back-to-back fifth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. The fifth-place finishes are the highest in program history. Among the accolades UVA has garnered under Busch, Leah Smith has won four NCAA titles, including both the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle in 2015 and 2016, and Courtney Bartholomew was a four-time NCAA individual runner-up (100- and 200-yard backstroke in 2015 and 2016). The Cavalier women have also posted the highest relay finish in school history (second in the 400 medley relay in 2015) and have had recorded the most championship-finalist relays in a single year in school history with four in 2016. In addition to winning their ninth-consecutive ACC Championship in 2015-16, the Cavalier women came home with 10 event wins, the most since 2010. The Virginia men improved two positions to sixth at the ACC Championships and finished 28th at NCAAs, which included Yannick Kaeser becoming the first UVA male swimmer to make a championship final since 2012. In 2014-15, Busch mentored the Cavalier women to the ACC Championship and their highest team finish (fifth-place) at the NCAA Championships. The UVa women won two NCAA titles (Smith in the 500 free and 1,650 free) and had four second-place finishes (Bartholomew in the 100 back and 200 back, Laura Simon in the 200 breast and the 400 medley relay), the most ever in program history. In addition, Busch guided Bartholomew to the second-fastest time ever in the 100 back (50.01) at the Georgia Fall Invitational. The Cavalier men placed ninth at ACCs and 33rd at NCAAs. Busch led the Cavalier women to the ACC Championship in 2014 and an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. This included Courtney Bartholomew (200 back) and Leah Smith (1,650 free) earning third-place finishs and the 800 free relay placing fifth at the 2014 national meet. The Cavalier men placed fourth at ACCs and 26th at NCAAs. Under Busch's tutelage, the Cavaliers have had 11 individuals earn 19 All-America honors and 20 honorable mention All-America honors, and have had eight All-America relays and five honorable mention All-America relays. In three seasons, the Cavaliers have broken 27 school records, seven ACC records and three NCAA records. For his efforts, Busch has been named the ACC Women's Swimming Coach of the Year in all three of his seasons at the helm. The Cavaliers have also been strong academically under Busch, with 28 student-athletes being named to the All-ACC Academic Teams and Ellen Williamson being recognized on the 2014 Captial One Academic All-District squad. Both Williamson and Haley Durmer earned an ACC Postgraduate Scholarship. In addition to coaching UVa, Busch was an assistant women's coach for the United States' 2015 World University Games squad, where Smith captured gold medals in the 400m free and the 4x200m free. Busch also served as an assistant women's coach for the U.S. at the 2015 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool. In his two seasons at Houston, Busch led the Cougars to a fourth-place finish in Conference USA in 2012 and to a program-best second-place league showing last season. At Houston, Busch improved the profile of the Cougars athletically and academically. The Cougars recorded personal-best times in 90 percent of their swims and broke seven school records in 2013 while achieving a program-best 3.42 team GPA. Before Houston, Busch was a highly-successful assistant coach at Arizona for eight seasons (2003-2011), where the Wildcats earned 15 top-five NCAA finishes, more than any other program during that period. His tenure in Tucson was highlighted by both Wildcat teams winning NCAA Championships in 2008. At UA, Busch worked primarily with the backstroke, butterfly and individual medley swimmers while also serving as the program's recruiting coordinator. In his eight seasons at Arizona, Busch's training group produced three NCAA champions, 21 individual All-Americans and swimmers on 10 national champion relay teams. Busch was instrumental in the success of two Olympians in Albert Subirats of Venezuela and Jake Tapp of Canada. Subirats is one of the most decorated swimmers in UA history with six national titles and 20 All-America accolades. Busch served as an assistant coach for the Venezuelan Olympic team in 2008 as well as for the 2007 Pan American Games. Before Arizona, Busch was an assistant coach for the Arkansas women's team, helping the Lady Razorbacks to school records in 15 of 18 events and a 31st-place finish at the 2003 NCAA meet. Prior to his tenure at Arkansas, Busch served as the head swimming coach at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson from 1999-2000. He began his coaching career in 1996 as an assistant coach for the Hillenbrand Aquatics club team, now known as Ford Aquatics. Busch was also a volunteer assistant with the UA program from 1998-2001 and he was head coach of a high-profile summer league program, Sabino Vista Hills, during those same years. Busch was a two-time letterwinner on the men's volleyball team at The Ohio State University before returning to his native Tucson, Arizona, and graduating from UA in 1998 with a degree in psychology. Busch minored in Spanish, a language he speaks fluently. Busch is the son of current USA Swimming National Team Director Frank Busch, who was a six-time NCAA Coach of the Year. Cory Chitwood
Assistant Coach
Chitwood works primarily with the Cavalier distance group. During the 2015-16 season, Chitwood mentored Leah Smith to successfully defend her NCAA titles in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle. Smith also captured the ACC titles in both events and set new NCAA records in the 1,000 free and 1,650 free at the ACC Champpionships. Chitwood also guided the 800 free relay to an ACC and UVA record and a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Chitwood also aided Kaitlyn Jones to ACC titles in the 400 IM and 200 butterfly and Jones and Megan Moroney to honorable mention All-America honors. Following the collegiate season, Chitwood coached Smith to an Olympic appearance by qualifying in three events, the 400-meter freestyle, the 800m free and the 4x200m free relay. Smith won gold in Rio with the relay, earned a bronze medal in the 400m free and placed sixth in the 800m free. In three seasons at UVA, Chitwood has coached Cavalier swimmers to three NCAA records, four ACC records, seven Virginia records and 23 UVA all-time top-10 times. In 2014-15, Chitwood guided Smith to NCAA titles in the 500 free and 1,650 free. Smith broke the NCAA record in the 500 free and set then-ACC and UVa records in the 1,000 free and 1,650 free. In addition, Smith won ACC titles in the 200 free, 500 free and 1,650 free and the ACC Champion 800 free relay was made up entirely of the Cavaliers distance group. In his first season, Chitwood helped guide the Cavaliers distance swimmers to three ACC Championships, including Brad Phillips in the mens 1,650 free and Leah Smith in the womens 500 and 1,650 free. Smith went on to finish third in the mile at the NCAA Championships, while Hanne Borgersen earned honorable mention All-America honors with a 16th-place finish. Smith broke the school record in three events (500, 1,000 and 1,650 free) and set new ACC records in the 500 free and the mile. Before coming to Charlottesville, Chitwood joined the Cavaliers from LSU, where he was an assistant coach for the 2012-13 season and worked primarily with the Tiger mid-distance and specialty-stroke swimmers. The 2012 graduate of Arizona won three consecutive NCAA Championships in the 200 backstroke and was a 14-time All-American as well as a four-year conference all-academic team member. On the international stage, Chitwood was a member of the U.S. National team and finished 10th in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:00.03 in the semifinals at the 2012 Olympic Trials. Before LSU, Chitwood served as the Northern Kentucky Clippers club teams head assistant coach, specializing with the elite 11-12 and 13-14 year old age groups after he completed his collegiate career. Sam Busch
Assistant Coach
Busch serves as the Cavaliers' recruiting coordinator and works primarily with the UVA sprint group. In 2015-16, Busch helped guide the Cavalier sprinters and the 200-yard freestyle relay to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, which is tied for the best finish in the event in school history (1983). In three seasons, Busch has mentored Cavalier sprinters to 17 all-time top-10 times at UVa and the women's 200 free relay and 400 free relay school records. In addition, Cavalier sprinters helped UVA's women break the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay school records and the 400 medley relay ACC record. Ellen Thomas was the anchor on the 400 medley relay that finished second at the 2015 NCAA Championships. Before coming to Charlottesville, Busch spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Auburn, where he helped lead the Tiger men to two top-ten NCAA finishes, including a sixth-place mark in 2012. Busch worked primarily with the backstroke and freestyle groups and guided Kyle Owens to 2012 SEC Championships in the 100 and 200 backstroke. Busch served as the initial scout for the Tiger recruiting program and helped coach the 2013 national champion men's 200 free relay. A 2008 graduate of Arizona, Busch mentored Marcelo Chierighini to the 2012 London Olympics where he competed for the Brazilian 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relays. Before Auburn, Busch served as a volunteer assistant for two seasons each at West Virginia (2009-11) and Arizona (2007-09). While in Tucson, Ariz., he assisted five seasons at Tucson Ford Aquatics, the 2010 National Club Champions. Busch also served three years as head coach of the women's program at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson. Clif Robbins
Assistant Coach
Robbins works primarily with the middle distance stroke/IM swimmers. During the 2015-16 season, Robbins aided Laura Simon and Yannick Kaeser to All-America honors in the breaststroke discipline. Simon finished seventh in the women's 100-yard breaststroke, while Kaeser placed seventh in the men's 200 breast. Simon also won the 200 breast ACC title and was a part of the 400 medley relay that finished third and the 200 medley realay that placed fourth at the NCAA Championships. For his work with the Cavalier women at the ECAC Championships, Robbins was named the ECAC Women's Coach of the Year. In 2014-15, Robbins mentored Laura Simon to a second-place finish in the 200 breast at the NCAA Championships, as well as an ACC title. Simon was also part of the 400 medley relay that placed second at NCAAs and the 200 medley relay that finished fourth. In addition, Simon touched fourth in the 100 breast at the national meet. Ellen Williamson and Yannick Kaeser broke school records in the women's 100 fly and men's 100 breast and earned honorable mention All-America honors in the women's 200 IM and men's 100 breast, respectively. In his first season, Robbins helped guide three Cavaliers, Luke Papendick (men's 200 back), Kaeser (men's 200 breast) and Simon (women's 200 breast) to honorable mention All-America honors, while the trio along with Ellen Williamson combined for six school records. Before coming to Charlottesville, Robbins was an assistant coach under UVa head coach Augie Busch at Houston for the 2012-13 season after serving as a volunteer assistant in 2011-12. Robbins helped guide the Cougars to a program-best second-place finish in Conference USA in 2013. The Cougars recorded personal-best times in 90 percent of their swims and broke seven school records in 2013 while achieving a program-best 3.42 team GPA. Assistant Coach
Rownd aided the sprint group in 2015-16 where the Cavalier women finished sixth in the 200 free relay at the NCAA Championships. Rownd comes from Johns Hopkins where she was member of the Blue Jay swimming and diving and track and field/cross country programs. On the swimming and diving team, she specialized in the 1,650 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 400 IM. She was also part of the Johns Hopkins cross country squads that captured the NCAA Division III Championship in 2012 and 2013. She is a three-time qualifier for the USA Triathlon National Championships and qualified for the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Championships for Team USA. Rownd graduated from Johns Hopkins with a bachelor's degree in behavioral biology in 2014 and is currently pursuing a master's degree in kinesiology-exercise physiology at UVa.
