Matt Zwaschka
Head Coach
Matt Zwaschka, a former assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team, returned to campus as he was named head coach on September 18, 2018. He enters his fifth season as the Warhawks' head coach in 2022-23. In 2021-22, Jaritt Shinhoster captured the national championship at 184 pounds to lead the Warhawks to a tie for 17th place at the NCAA Championship. Zwaschka led UW-W to a 9-1 dual record during the regular season, including a 4-1 mark against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition. Zwaschka's 2019-20 team tied a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference high with four individual conference titles and finished as WIAC runner-up and NCAA Upper Midwest Regional second runner-up. The Warhawks qualified four individuals for the NCAA Championship, including three top-four seeds, before the national tournament was canceled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In the 2018-19 season, Zwaschka led the Warhawks to a seventh-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships. Mike Tortorice finished runner up at 125 pounds and Riley Kauzlaric finished third at 197 pounds. The team finished as runner-up at the WIAC Championship, where it claimed five individual titles. In his first year as head coach, Zwaschka helped four Warhawks earn All-American, three earn NWCA All-Academic honors and three earn a total of five WIAC Athlete of the Week awards. Zwaschka served as an assistant coach for the Warhawks from 2005-11, working in all aspects of the program. He helped the team tie for 12th at the 2009 NCAA Championships and coached seven All-Americans, eight Academic All-Americans and six individual Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions. After leaving UW-Whitewater, Zwaschka was hired as head wrestling coach at the Milwaukee School of Engineering in 2013, helping four Raiders reach the NCAA Championships during his five years at the helm. He coached one All-American and seven Academic All-Americans while overseeing all aspects of the program and serving as assistant director of recreation at MSOE. Zwaschka also worked as an assistant wrestling coach and assistant football coach at Port Washington High School during his tenure at MSOE. He was a physical education and health education teacher in the Port Washington Saukville School District from 2011-13. Zwaschka is currently the Junior Greco Roman National Team coach for the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation, a position he has held since 2012. A native of Marshfield, Zwaschka wrestled at UW-La Crosse during his undergraduate career, earning four letters and claiming the WIAC championship and a spot at the NCAA Championships at 165 pounds in 2003. Ned Shuck

Shuck, the 2015-16 WIAC Coach of the Year, enters his third year as head wrestling coach at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2016-17. He was hired to the position in August 2014. In 2015-16, the Warhawks garnered their second consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship under Shuck and fifth straight overall. UW-Whitewater tied for third at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship and sent four national qualifiers to the NCAA Championship, including junior Zac Denny (125 pounds), who earned All-America accolades with a fourth-place finish. In Shuck's first season at the helm, the Warhawks claimed the WIAC championship and NCAA Division III Midwest Regional title. UW-Whitewater placed fourth at the NCAA Championship, posting five All-America honors as a result of top eight finishes in five different weight classes. Junior Shane Siefert finished as national runner-up at 197 pounds. Under Shuck's leadership, the Warhawks have earned nine National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-America accolades and five Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete honors. UW-Whitewater student-athletes have earned 10 WIAC individual championships and three regional titles in the last two years. Shuck began his tenure with the Warhawks after serving as head wrestling coach at Heidelberg University, an NCAA Division III institution in Tiffin, Ohio. During his three years at Heidelberg, Shuck led the Student Princes to consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference championships (2012-13, 2013-14) and mentored 22 All-OAC selections, four academic all-conference honorees, seven National Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-Americans and six individual NCAA qualifiers, including one All-American. He was selected OAC Coach of the Year following the 2013-14 campaign. While at Heidelberg, Shuck managed all facets of the wrestling program, including academic performance, fundraising, marketing, camps, alumni relations and community service. Shuck served as an assistant coach at perennial national power Augsburg (Minn.) from 2009-11. He helped lead the Augies to the 2010 NCAA Division III championship and a runner-up performance at the 2011 national championships. Shuck helped coach 13 All-Americans, four national finalists and one national champion during his tenure at Augsburg. During his career, Shuck also served as an assistant coach with the Ohio Cadet/Junior National Team (2012-14) and as head coach for the Minnesota Storm Freestyle Cadet team (2009-11). He was a full scholarship recipient for the NWCA Leadership Academy in 2011. Shuck wrestled at the University of Iowa from 2000-05. He was a four-time letter winner and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection for the Hawkeyes. In addition to his coaching duties, Shuck is an instructor for UW-Whitewaters Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching department. Shuck and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Whitewater and have two children, Lukas (6 years old) and Micah (3).

Justin Wharton

Wharton, a former assistant coach and student-athlete at Heidelberg (Ohio) University, was named assistant head wrestling coach at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in August 2015. He enters his second year with the Warhawks in 2016-17. Wharton, who served as an assistant at Heidelberg for the last two seasons, will serve as recruiting coordinator and assist in all facets of the Warhawks' program. He will also be an instructor in the UW-Whitewater Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching. Wharton helped coach six regional placers and an All-American for the Student Princes. After taking over all recruiting responsibilities in the summer of 2014, he recruited 30 student-athletes to Heidelberg for the fall 2014 semester. Wharton also held responsibilities in teaching, fundraising, marketing and academics. A three-year letter winner as a wrestler at Heidelberg from 2009-13, Wharton was a two-time second team All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection. He also garnered Scholar-Athlete accolades on two occasions. Wharton competed with Shuck as his head coach for his last two seasons. "I am fired up to have Justin on our staff," head coach Ned Shuck said. "He is an extremely hard-working and dedicated coach. I had the pleasure of coaching him for a couple years as a student-athlete, and working alongside him on the same coaching staff for a year. As soon as we started working together, I could see that he had the passion and skill to be a great coach." During his undergraduate career, Wharton served as a volunteer with the Lake Erie Freestyle and Greco Roman Wrestling Club, the Heidelberg Youth and High School Club and the Clay High School Wrestling Camp. A native of Oregon, Ohio, Wharton graduated from Heidelberg with a bachelor's in health and physical education in 2013. He earned his master's in education from Heidelberg in 2015. Adam Latella
Coach
Adam Latella, a 2014 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, enters his fourth season as an assistant coach in 2022-23. He also serves as a lecturer in the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching. Latella was named NCAA Upper Midwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020 after helping the Warhawks place third at the regional tournament and qualify four individuals for the NCAA Championship. Latella most recently served as the Olympic Training Site Head Weightlifting Coach at Northern Michigan University, overseeing all aspects of the team during the 2018-19 year. He led the men's and women's teams to second-place finishes at the University Nationals and coached two individual national champions, two individual silver medalists, three individual bronze medalists and 14 other top-10 placers. As a wrestler for the Warhawks, Latella competed in the 197-pound weight class for three seasons, beginning his sophomore year in 2009. He was a member of the 2010-11 team that tied for 29th place at the NCAA Division III Tournament. In 2012, the team clinched the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and finished eighth at the NCAA Division III Tournament. In 2009-10, Latella was voted as the team's Most Improved after he finished as the runner-up at the WIAC Championships and qualified for his first NCAA Championship. Latella was named as a team captain for the 2010-11 season. His team voted him as the Most Valuable Wrestler after winning his first WIAC title in 2011. At his second NCAA Division III Championship appearance, he placed fifth, earning All-American accolades. In 2011-12, Latella was again a team captain and won his second conference title. He was named as a Scholar-All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Following graduation, Latella served as a student assistant coach for the 2012-13 season and as an assistant coach in the 2013-15 seasons. He worked as an academic advising graduate assistant in the 2014-15 school year. Latella was a full-time academic advisor from 2015 until 2018. Besides competing and working with the wrestling program, Latella was also a member of the UW-Whitewater Olympic Weightlifting Club, where he was a three-time state champion. He was the club's assistant coach in 2013-15 before being named as the head coach for the 2015-18 seasons. He led the club to its first state championship in 2016 and two consecutive championships in 2017 and 2018. A native of Rockton, Ill., Latella graduated from UW-Whitewater with a bachelor's degree in human health and performance and recreation with a minor in coaching in 2014. He also completed his master's degree in Physical Education, Health and Coaching in 2015 at UW-Whitewater.
