Todd Smoot

Head Coach

Smoot was announced as the head coach of the cross country program at Valdosta State on August 13, 2015. Smoot, a well known name in the running community throughout the southeast, brings a vast amount of knowledge and over 35 years of experience to Valdosta State's cross country team. With a diverse portfolio and experience as a part-time coach at VSU from 2008 through 2013, Reinhard is thrilled to bring Smoot back to the program. "I'm very pleased to have Todd coming back and joining us again," stated Reinhard. "It's great to have somebody with not only his cross country experience, but also his experience with Valdosta State and our program. I'm thankful that he has been able to join us quickly to help get us going this fall, and I look forward to the success he'll bring moving forward." While at VSU, Smoot helped produce ten All-Conference runners and six All-Region honorees. In addition, he placed a high emphasis on academics throughout his tenure, which resulted in seven All-Academic Gulf South Conference student-athletes and 46 runners on the All-GSC Honor Roll. In addition to his years at Valdosta State, Smoot's expansive list of experience includes employment with A Course/Line Event Production, where he spent time creating, designing, and measuring courses and timing events - many of which have been held locally - with detailed, accurate, and complete results. With his help, the company made tremendously generous contributions to Veterans of Lowndes County, local food banks, and Toys-for-Tots. Since earning a Chemistry degree at North Carolina State University, Smoot held a variety of positions before starting his own specialty running shoe store in Valdosta during the mid 2000's known as Get Active Running and More. He has also hosted a weekly local radio show for five years that began in 2005 and focused on the benefits of being active. Most recently, he has served as the branch manager of the YMCA in Lake Park, Ga., where he helped create fitness programs for all ages, offered weekly running classes, and participated in community events that included blood drives, food drives, and Lunch-N-Learn events. His accomplishments as a runner earned him a spot on the NCSU indoor track team in the early 1980's, where he set personal bests with a 4:21 minute mile run, a 9:20 minute two-mile run, and a 14:43 time 5K run. His running experiences also include participation in competitive events in Chicago, Ill., Philadelphia, Penn., Columbia, S.C., and Jacksonville, Fla., Atlanta, Ga., and Huntsville, Ala.
