John Hansen

Head Coach

Hansen has built both the VSU men's and women's tennis teams into national powers. After 41 years at the helm of Valdosta State tennis, Hansen will aim for his third NCAA National Championship in 2015, with his teams owning two of Valdosta State's five NCAA national championships already. Under Hansen, the Blazers and Lady Blazers have combined for 20 South Atlantic and Gulf South Conference championships, including 10 men's championships and four women's championships in the GSC. Hansen has been named conference Coach of the Year on 20 occasions in both conferences, taking home the award 11 times in the GSC for the men and five more times as the women's coach. Hansen was most recently named the GSC Coach of the Year in both the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He also received plenty of national recognition, as he took home the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's National Division II Coach of the Year Award in 2010. He was named the South Region Men's Coach of the Year in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011. He added the South Region Women's Coach of the Year award in 2005, 2007 and 2008. In addition to being honored for his accomplishments, Hansen ensures his players perform at a high level to attain personal recognition as well. He has coached over 64 All-American players and has had an athlete named All-Gulf South Conference 160 times, including 78 men and 82 women. Thanks to Hansen, Valdosta State has boasted the GSC Player of the Year on 22 separate occasions, 12 men and 10 women. In fact, Philip Pakebusch won his second consecutive GSC Player of the Year award in 2011, which, at the time, marked the third consecutive season a Blazer had won the award. The GSC's Freshman of the Year has often come from VSU as well as 11 women and six men have won the award under Hansen's tutelage. Sabrina Schmidt is the most recent Blazer to win it as she did so in 2014.   He has directed the VSU women's tennis team to 15 NCAA tournament appearances, including top four finishes in 2005, 2008 and 2009. His men's teams have played in NCAA postseason play 20 times, winning the hallowed NCAA National Championship in 2006 and 2011 and finishing as the national runner-up in 2004, 2007 and 2010. He is the only active VSU coach to already be named to the Valdosta State Athletic Hall of Fame and just the second coach all-time to earn the honor while still actively coaching. With all the coaching accomplishments Hansen has compiled, his coaching remains sharper than ever as VSU recently finished one of its most impressive seasons to date in 2011. The men's team secured Valdosta State's fifth NCAA National Championship and the second for men's tennis. The team compiled an outstanding 21-1 record with the only loss coming to national power Armstrong Atlantic State. Valdosta State was undefeated in conference play and never fell lower than second in the ITA's national rankings.
