Morel spent the next 16 years coaching at his alma mater, the University of La Verne. He first served as the offensive coordinator at La Verne from 1991-1994. During those four years, La Verne averaged 34 points per game. The team won conference championships in 1993 and 1994, making an NCAA playoff appearance in 1994. In 1991, La Vernes quarterback, Willie Reyna, led the nation in passing efficiency. He was promoted to head coach in 1995, a position he would hold until 2006. Morel accumulated a record of 47-56 during that time, including a 33-27 conference record. The team won the SCIAC championship in his first season in 1995.
