Head Coach
DeRubbo (Concord '94; 13th year) returns for her 13th season on the Washington & Jefferson College bench as head women's basketball coach in 2016-17. DeRubbo also serves as the college's Senior Women's Administrator and the Title IX Coordinator, while adding the title of Assistant Athletic Director, effective July 1, 2015. W&J has won 70 percent of its games (241-101) since DeRubbo took over as head coach. On Feb. 6, 2013, she won her 300th game as a collegiate head coach (16 overall seasons) after the Presidents defeated Grove City 69-50. She later won her 200th game at W&J on Dec. 3, 2014, a 49-42 victory also against Grove City. DeRubbo's overall career record (372-158, .702) ranks 37th among active NCAA Division III coaches. DeRubbo has been to the postseason nine times at W&J: four NCAA Division III Tournament appearances (2005, 2006, 2009, 2010) and six ECAC Tournament showings (2007, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016). The 2008 team won the ECAC Division III Southern Tournament Championship. In 19 years as a collegiate head coach (12 seasons at W&J; 7 at Bethany), DeRubbo's squads have competed in the postseason 15 times (8 - NCAA, 7 - ECAC). She has also led teams to six Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships. DeRubbo has guided 13 different teams to 20-win seasons, including ten at W&J. DeRubbo led the Presidents to the 2016 PAC championship game and ECAC South championship game after the programs fourth straight 20-win season. As a result, DeRubbo won her sixth PAC Coach of the Year award and coached Beka Bellhy to d3hoops.com all-region and ECAC all-star honors. Following the 2014-15 season, Valerie Dunlap '15 became the first Capital One Academic All-American in women's basketball history at W&J. Dunlap was also a nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Beka Bellhy '16 earned First Team All-PAC honors and reached the 1,000-point plateau during her junior season in 14-15. The 2009-10 Presidents established the school record for victories (24-5) and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Presidents' 2009 senior class, recruited by DeRubbo, graduated with the most victories in school history with 89. In 2008, W&J won the ECAC Division III Southern Tournament Championship for just the second time in school history. W&J opened the ECAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and defeated Moravian, 86-76, at home in the opening round. The Presidents knocked off top-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy, 64-56, in the semifinals and then completed the championship run with a 78-70 victory over Lebanon Valley in the title game. That same year (on December 8, 2007), DeRubbo won her 200th career game after W&J defeated Grove City by a 76-60 margin. During the 2006-2007 season, DeRubbo guided a young Presidents' squad to a 20-9 overall record. W&J received a postseason home game in the ECAC Tournament and advanced to the ECAC Semifinals. The 2005-2006 Presidents swept the Presidents' Athletic Conference regular-season championship and the tournament title. DeRubbo was honored as the PAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in her career. DeRubbo helped Leigh (Sulkowski) Slowey (2002-06) develop into one of the nation's best players. Sulkowski was the PAC Player of the Year and a consensus All-American both of her years under DeRubbo. DeRubbo has coached six All-Americans throughout her career and eight PAC Players of the Year. DeRubbo came to W&J from Bethany College (W.Va.) where she turned the Bison program into a perennial national contender. Bethany made four NCAA Division III Tournament appearances in five seasons and also qualified for the ECAC South Region Tournament in 1999. In her seven seasons with the Bison, DeRubbo became the all-time leader in victories at the College with an overall record of 131-57. Bethany claimed five Presidents Athletic Conference Championships and DeRubbo earned PAC Coach of the Year honors four times. DeRubbo helped to develop four players who earned All-America and All-Region laurels. In addition, five of her players went on to be named the PAC Player of the Year. Prior to her experience at Bethany, DeRubbo served as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Marietta College for two seasons. Her responsibilities included scouting and player development as well as overseeing the strength and conditioning program.
