Mike Orstein

Head Coach

Orstein is no stranger to the world of aquatics, a sport that he has been a part of his entire life. His 460-198-2 record at W&J makes him the most successful swimming and diving coach in the colleges history. For his accomplishments, Orstein was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame for Washington-Greene County Chapter in May of 2014. He is also a May 2015 inductee into the Western Pennsylvania Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. He earned his 400th career victory at W&J during the 2011-12, while also coaching four student-athletes to individual conference championships, including diver Bethany Haver '12, who made her second-straight appearance at the NCAA Division III National Championships.  Coach Orsteins continued success has also been recognized at the national level, as he was awarded the prestigious Master Coach Award at the May 1996 College Swimming Coaches of America Associations (CSCAA) national convention. This honor was only conferred upon eight NCAA coaches that year. Recently, Orstein has been honored by the American Swimming Coaches Association with a Certificate of Excellence for outstanding achievement (2006-2008). Coach Orsteins career record, which has spanned 32 years, is 520-223-3. During the 2014-2015 season, he passed a major milestone as he earned his 500th college swimming victory. Coach Orstein has been at the helm of the swimming and diving programs at W&J for the past 28 years, and has earned the Presidents' Athletic Conference Swimming Coach of the Year award an impressive 15 times. His other accomplishments during his career at the college include producing eight national champions, 17 All-Americans, 36 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championship qualifiers and 248 PAC Champions. He has coached teams to nine PAC titles, 218 school records, and 61 conference records. During the 2010-11 season, Haver earned a pair of First All-America awards after placing among the top eight finishers (5th, 3-meter; 7th 1-meter) at the NCAA Division III Diving Championships. From 2004-2008, Orstein coached his daughter, Kaitlyn, to one of the most impressive careers in the history of NCAA Division III swimming.  Kaitlyn won eight national championships and earned 14 NCAA All-America citations.  She won 25 conference championships and was a four-time PAC Swimmer of the Year.  An equally impressive and important accomplishment is his teams success out of the water. Coach Orsteins teams have consistently earned CSCAA All-Academic recognition for having one of the highest GPAs in the country. His most prized possession is being honored with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Distinguished Service Award for outstanding leadership on January 17, 2005, by Washington & Jefferson College. Prior to coming to Washington and Jefferson College, Coach Orstein served as the Athletic Director at York Country Day School and Head Womens Swimming Coach at York College (PA). During his tenure there he built the York team into a regional Division III power, earned a winning percentage of .847, and rewrote the colleges record books. From 1979-1982 Coach Orstein gained international experience through his position in Bermuda as the first Aquatics Director at Warwick Academy. During his time in Bermuda, he coached numerous national champions and record holders, and was integral in the revival of water polo through his position as the player/coach for the Belmont team. In much the same way, Orstein was responsible for the emergence of water polo at W&J when he secured a $60,000 grant from the USOC in April 1999. This victory came after eight years of effort on Coach Orsteins part to bring the sport to the college. During his four seasons as head coach, both mens and womens teams were ranked nationally in the Top 10 every year. The womens team traveled to the Collegiate III National Championships, where they finished 7th in 2000 and 6th in 2001. In this short amount of time the team produced three All-Americans. Orstein also received the honor of being named the Division III Tournament Championships Coach of the Year in 2002 and as well as earning CWPA Southern Division Coach of the Year that same season. Prior to Coach Orsteins involvement in the successful water polo program, he served as the W&J mens and womens track and field coach. Under Orstein, Jaimee Heffner became the first W&J female athlete to win an individual NCAA championship when she won the 1997 Division III Championship in the womens javelin. She ended her career at W&J with honors including being a four time All-American, nomination as one of 10 finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, and the reception of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Award. Orsteins athletic accomplishments are nearly as weighty as his achievement in coaching. He is a four time All-American swimmer from Springfield College (Mass.), where he completed both his B.S. and M.Ed. in Physical Education. Coach Orstein was born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania where he was an All-State swimmer, an All-District III track and field athlete, and a graduate of Manheim Township High School. Coach Orstein has been happily married to his wife Heather for 36 years. They reside in East Washington. Mike and Heather are the proud parents of their two children, Jepthah and Kaitlyn. Jepthah is a 2004 graduate of Washington & Jefferson College and a 2008 graduate of the Duquesne University School of Law. He is a successful lawyer for Ainsman, Levine, LLC in Pittsburgh.  He has been recognized for four consecutive years as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer, Rising Star.  Kaitlyn, a 2008 W&J graduate, works for Eddy Homes as their office manager. Mike Orstein  is no stranger to the world of aquatics, a sport that he has been a part of his entire life.

Vic Galati

Coach

Galati enters his 10th season at Washington & Jefferson College in 2016-17 as the programs diving coach. Galati earned his 12th career Presidents' Athletic Conference Diving Coach of the Year award, claiming his sixth-straight Men's Coach of the Year award. W&J claimed the top three spots on the one-meter board and three of the top four on the three-meter board at the league championships on the men's side. Josh Vasko ('17) earned his second-straight sweep on both boards and became the first PAC diver to win the one-meter title three times in a row since 2006-08. At the 2014-15 Presidents' Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, Galati swept the Coach of the Year awards, marking the 10th and 11th honors in his career. He is the only person to win the award as PAC women's diving coach of the year and has been awarded the last five men's laurels. Jennifer Suder and Josh Vasko won their respective Diver of the Year honors from the PAC as well. Galati was selected as the PAC Diving Coach of the Year for the third-straight season after helping Jennifer Suder '15 and John Szott '13 sweep the conference's Diver of the Year awards. Szott won both the 1- and 3-meter titles, while Suder took first place on the 3-meter platform at the PAC Championship meet. In 2011-12, Galati guided Bethany Haver '12 to her second-straight appearance at the NCAA Division III Diving Championships.  During the 2010-11 season, Galati helped Haver earn a pair of First All-America awards after placing among the top eight finishers (5th, 3-meter; 7th 1-meter) at the NCAA Diving Championships.  Haver was the first female diver from the Presidents' Athletic Conference to compete at the national championships. Following the 2012 PAC Championships, Galati became the back-to-back PAC Men's and Women's Diving Coach of the Year after Justin Weifenbach '12 and Haver swept the conference championships for the second-straight time. Galati was selected as the 2010 Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's Diving Coach of the Year after helping Haver earn a pair of conference titles. Haver broke the conference record on both boards. In 2009, Weifenbach set school records at 1-meter and 3-meter under Galati's tutelage. Galati previously was the assistant coach for W&J swimming & diving from 1998-2003. In 2002, two Presidents qualified for the national championships under his guidance. Before originally starting at W&J, Galati was the diving coach for Canon-McMillan High School from 1993 to 1999. He also served as the Canon-McMillan girls head swimming coach from 1996 to 1999. He is a 1992 graduate of Westminster College, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration. While at Westminster, he was a four-time letter winner and competed in the 1- and 3-meter diving events, where he earned fifth place at the Penn Ohio Conference Meet (1992). Galati also placed 12th in the 1650 freestyle event (1991), 11th in the 400-IM (1990), and fourth in the 200-freestyle relay (1989) at the Pennsylvania-Ohio Conference Meet.
