Lumumba Shabazz
Head Coach
Jan Hathorn, Michael F. Walsh Director of Athletics at Washington and Lee University, has announced the appointment of Lumumba Shabazz as Associate Professor of Physical Education and the 10th Head Coach of Men’s Soccer in program history effective June 2024. Across his first two seasons at the helm of the program, Shabazz has led the Generals to a 26-9-11 overall record, while going 13-1-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Generals have made the NCAA Tournament in both seasons under Shabazz's coaching, including the program's third all-time appearance in the national semifinals during the 2024 tournament. The 2024 ODAC Coach of the Year, Shabazz has mentored 14 players to All-ODAC status, 10 All-Region picks and one United Soccer Coaches All-American in Weyimi Agbeyegbe '25. Josh Gildea
Assistant Coach
Josh Gildea joined the W&L men's soccer coaching staff as an assistant coach in July 2024. In his first season with the Generals, Gildea aided in the coaching the team to the program's third national semifinal game in the last four seasons, while winning the program's eighth ODAC Tournament championship. The team shook a 1-3 start to the season by rattling off a program-record 20 consecutive games without a loss before falling against Connecticut College, 1-0, in the national semifinal. Led by 2024 ODAC Player of the Year and United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American Weyimi Agbeyegbe '25, Gildea helped his players to eight All-ODAC awards and five All-Region citations, with Will Joseph '26 being named the 2024 ODAC Scholar Athlete of the Year.
