David Detwiler

Head Coach

David Detwiler is in his 25th season as the head men's tennis coach at Washington and Lee. He has been involved with the Generals for a total of 28 years as director of the Duchossois Tennis Center and an assistant men's and women's tennis coach. In his 24 seasons in charge of the men's tennis program, Detwiler has engineered some of the finest seasons in school history. He is the winningest coach in program history with a 381-160 (.704) overall record. He has also produced 22 Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles and 22 trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Additionally, his teams have consistently ranked in the Division III Top 25 polls. Detwiler's 2007 team set a school record for victories in a season by going 20-3 overall, claiming the ODAC Tournament Championship and receiving a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament. His 2008 team went 18-5 overall, won the conference title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2012, he guided the Generals to a 16-5 mark, another ODAC crown and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. His 2013 club finished with an 18-6 overall record and fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament and his 2014 team was 18-5 overall and fell in the second round of the big dance. His 2015 team went 15-9 and again advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2016, W&L battled through injuries to claim a 16-9 overall record and another ODAC title. The Generals then stunned N.C. Wesleyan with a thrilling 5-4 comeback victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The 2014 edition of the Generals produced a 16-7 overall record and once again made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In his time as an assistant women's tennis coach with the Generals, Detwiler helped lead W&L to a pair of ODAC titles and NCAA Tournament berths. Before arriving at W&L, Detwiler spent eight years as the Tennis Director at Shadow Oaks Racquet Club in Greenville, S.C. He is a 1988 graduate of Furman University, where he was a four-year letterwinner and team captain as a senior. Detwiler won two Southern Conference singles titles and three doubles titles, while helping the team to a pair of league championships. He also won the USTA National 25-and-under clay court doubles championship in 1993. Well respected in the tennis coaching profession, Detwiler was presented with the 2003 USTA/ITA Community Service Award for the Mid-Atlantic Region for his work with the Lexington and W&L Communities through the Duchossois Tennis Center. James Moeckel

Assistant Coach

James Moeckel joined the Washington and Lee men's tennis coaching staff as an assistant coach on January 12, 2026. Moeckel has spent recent years in Brazil serving as a private tennis coach, with additional tennis coaching experience with the Gustavo Kuerton Institute in Brazil. He also served with Camp Sunshine in Atlanta, heading tennis activities, after working as an instructor at Florida Gator Tennis Camps in Gainesville, Fla.   Earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Furman University, Moeckel competed on the men's tennis team and was a two-time NCAA Tournament participant. He then went on to play in tournaments in England, as part of the Girobank Tour, against aspiring ATP Tour-level players.
