Pete Gyscek

Head Coach

Pete Gyscek is in his 10th year as the Thomas R. Wall, IV ’80 Head Men's Golf Coach at Washington and Lee. His first nine years have produced some of the finest seasons in the history of both the men's and women's programs. The men's program has reached new heights under Gyscek's leadership, highlighted by a runner-up finish at the 2018 NCAA Division III Championship.  Additionally, he helped mentor Brian Peccie '20 to the 2018 individual National Championship, the first-ever for a W&L golfer.  Peccie was a three-time All-American, he claimed the 2018 Arnold Palmer Award and was a finalist for the 2019 Jack Nicklaus Award. W&L seized the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference title, and the Generals advanced to the last four NCAA Men's Golf Championships that have been contested.  Additionally, W&L has also finished Top 25 in the Golfstat Division III rankings each of the last five years, placing 11th in 2016, 14th in 2017, eighth in 2018, 16th in 2019 and 21st in 2020. Academic success has also been at the forefront of the program, highlighted by the Generals receiving GCAA All-Academic honors seven years running.  Additionally, W&L golfers have claimed Cleveland Golf/Srixon Scholar All-America honors 15 times over the last five seasons. As the coach of the men's program, Gyscek has helped his golfers achieve all-conference honors 24 times, with Peccie '20, Luke Farley '18, Sean Puleo '20 and Conley Hurst '17 all earning All-America honors. Gyscek started the women's program from the ground up, serving as head coach of the team from 2012-19. In 2015, the program's third full varsity season, he helped guide the Generals to a remarkable turnaround.  W&L went from 104th in the 2014 Golfstat rankings to 13th in 2015.  Gyscek led the Generals to the ODAC title and the team received an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Championships, where they finished 14th out of 21 teams.  Two players, Mary-Frances Hall '18 and Liza Freed '18, were named to the Division III All-America team, with Hall also garnering ODAC Rookie and Player of the Year laurels.  Gyscek was honored as the league's Co-Coach of the Year at the conference championship and he was also named the WGCA East Region Coach of the Year. The 2016 team finished 24th in the GolfStat Division III rankings and the season was highlighted by Mary-Frances Hall '18 winning the conference individual title and Freed finishing in a tie for 18th at the NCAA Division III Championship.  Additionally, Freed earned WGCA Division III Honorable Mention All-America honors for a second time. The 2017 campaign saw W&L finish 18th in the GolfStat Division III rankings, while Freed earned First Team All-America honors, a first for the program.  Freed received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship and finished in a tie for 49th overall. In 2018, W&L claimed its second ODAC title and once again advanced to the NCAA Championship event, barely missing the cut.  Gyscek was named the ODAC Co-Coach of the Year for a second time, winning the conference title by an astounding 58 shots. The 2019 campaign once again took the program to new heights.  The Blue & White won the ODAC crown by 78 strokes and Gyscek was once again named ODAC Coach of the Year.  W&L went on a finish a program-best tied for 11th at the NCAA Championship, and the program notched a 17th-place finish in the GolfStat rankings. Gyscek came to W&L following six seasons as the assistant men’s and women’s golf coach at the College of William & Mary.  In this role, he was responsible for assisting the director of golf with the management and administration of both programs, including assuming the role of head coach for one of the programs when they played simultaneously.  The Tribe’s men’s and women’s programs combined to tie or break 50 school records during his tenure, including having both a man and woman set school records for season and career scoring average at the school.  The men’s team finished as the Colonial Athletic Association runner-up in 2010 and the women’s team ranked among the NCAA Top 100 in each of the past two seasons, a first for the program. In addition to his coaching experience at William & Mary, Gyscek owned and operated the Dynamic Golf Studio in Williamsburg, Va., from 2001-2008.  There he maintained a PGA Retail Teaching Center that specialized in game improvement, lessons and video analysis for regional college and amateur players. Gyscek has also worked at Pro Golf Discount in Newport News, Va. (1998-2001) and was an assistant golf professional at the Royal New Kent Golf Club (1997-98) and at the Harbourtowne Resort and Conference Center (1996-97). Gysek is a Class “A” member of the PGA of America and he has competed as a professional on several mini-tours and in the Mid-Atlantic PGA. He is also a member of the National Golf Coaches Association, and is a Certified Golf Instructor, as well as being a Master Clubfitter and Equipment Specialist.  A 1985 graduate of Niagara University with a bachelor of science in business management, Gyscek was a four-year letterwinner and three-year captain for the Purple Eagles’ golf team.
