Bryan Snyder
Head Coach
Bryan Snyder is entering his 21st season as the head coach of the Washington and Lee volleyball program. He also serves as the University's Assistant Athletic Director for Finance. A 1995 W&L graduate, Snyder has tasted nothing but success in his time with the Generals, leading them to a 532-172 (.756) overall record and a 184-19 (.906) Old Dominion Athletic Conference mark during his first 20 seasons. In his time at the helm of the program, W&L has won 12 ODAC titles, advanced to the NCAA Tournament 13 times and he has earned nine conference Coach of the Year honors. Under Snyder's stead, the Generals appeared in the AVCA Top 25 Division III poll for the first time in school history in 2005 and 12 players, Courtney Berry, M.A. Boles, Lauren Edmonson, Meg Guignon, Christine Gladysz, Susan Gaillard, Brynne Gould, Rachel Phillips, Mackenzie Shand, Jessica Ulrich, Allison Webb and Emily Wolfing, have been named to the AVCA Division III All-America teams, a first for Washington and Lee volleyball. W&L claimed the ODAC Championship in 2018, finishing the season with a 21-13 overall record and an 11-1 mark in league play. It marked the 12th ODAC title for the program under Snyder and with the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament the program made its 13th trip to the playoffs with Snyder at the helm. The Generals saw their season come to a close in a five-set loss (3-2) to then fourth-ranked Colorado College in the NCAA First Round. During the season, Snyder claimed the 500th win at W&L, becoming the first coach in school history to register 500 wins, while coaching one team at the school. The Generals finished the 2017 season 24-10 overall and 10-1 in the conference. The team's season ended, when it lost in five sets in the championship contest of the ODAC Tournament. The Blue and White went 24-10 overall and 9-2 in the ODAC during the 2016 season. The squad advanced to the championship match of the ODAC Tournament. During the season, Snyder surpassed 500 victories in his career, becoming the 27th active Division III coach with at least 500 wins. He has an overall career record of 573-197 (.744). W&L finished the 2015 season 18-15 overall and 9-2 in the ODAC. The Blue and White advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament. The Generals ended the 2014 season 27-7 overall and claimed the ODAC Championship. The squad also made the NCAA Tournament. During that season, Snyder registered the 450th victory of his career and his 400th at Washington and Lee. The Blue and White finished the 2013 season 28-7 overall, winning the ODAC title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Snyder was also honored with the ODAC Coach of the Year award. In 2012, he led W&L to the ODAC Championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the year 26-10, and lost to eventual national semifinalist Christopher Newport in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Snyder guided the Generals to eight-straight ODAC Championships and nine consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament from 2001-2009, while helping W&L set a new school record for victories three times. This culminated with the 2003 squad posting a 35-4 overall record. That followed a 32-8 campaign in 2002 and a 30-5 season in 2001. Snyder's 2006 team finished the season with a 29-8 record and advanced to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Tournament after knocking off top-seeded NYU in the New York Regional. His 2007 team completed the year at 29-6 overall and in 2008 Snyder once again reached the 30-win plateau as he led the Generals to a 31-7 mark. The ODAC Coach of the Year nine of the past 19 seasons and the Virginia College Division Coach of the Year five of the last 19 years, Snyder's initial season in 2000 saw the Generals go 20-10 overall, falling in the ODAC Championship match. In addition to his volleyball experience, Snyder spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the W&L women's basketball team and was the interim head coach during the 2002-03 season. Snyder came back to W&L from St. Mary's (Md.) where he served as head volleyball coach and sports information director for two seasons. While at St. Mary's, Snyder directed the Seahawks to a 41-25 overall record and two third-place finishes in the CAC. Twice his team earned American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Awards, while his 1998 squad finished with a 20-11 overall record, had a school-record eight-match winning streak, and a No. 7 ranking in the mid-atlantic region. His 1999 squad finished with a 21-14 overall record. In his duties as sports information director, Snyder was responsible for all aspects of promoting St. Mary's 13-sport athletic program. Following his graduation from W&L in 1995, Snyder served as the assistant sports information director at his alma mater until departing for St. Mary's in January of 1998. As an undergraduate, Snyder assisted the sports information office while also serving as a student assistant coach for the volleyball team his senior year. Snyder is married to former W&L Head Athletic Trainer Holly Snyder. The two reside in Buena Vista, Va., with their son, Devin, and their daughter, Geneva.
