Madara arrived at WashU after spending four seasons as the men and women’s head coach at Grinnell College. She also served as an assistant professor in the physical education department. In 2025, Madara led the Bears to the program's first-ever National Championship. WashU hosted a regional, defeating Grinnell and Kenyon to advance to the finals site.In the Elite 8 match, the Bears beat defending national champion UChicago 4-3 to advance to the program's first-ever national semifinal. In the national semifinal, the Bears beat No. 9 Johns Hopkins 4-1 and went on to defeat No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer 4-3 in the title match. First-year Caitlin Bui was named an All-American in both singles and doubles while sophomore Eleanor Archer picked up All-American honors in doubles. Bui was named the ITA National Rookie of the Year, marking the second time in program history a Bear earned this honor. Junior Eliana Hanna became the first person in program history to win the ITA National Player to Watch award. Bui earned All-UAA Rookie of the Year honors as well as picking up a first team nod for both No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. Archer also earned a spot on the first team for No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Hanna earned a spot on the second team for No. 3 singles and an honorable mention for No. 3 doubles. First-year Ally Lin was named to the second team for No. 4 singles and earned an honorable mention for No. 3 doubles. Madara and assistant coach Erin Swaller were named UAA Coaching Staff of the Year. In 2024, Madara guided the Bears to the NCAA Elite Eight and a program record national ranking of No. 7. She was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year and the ITA National Coach of the Year in 2024. During the 2024 season, the Bears earned numerous awards. Eleanor Archer was named UAA Rookie of the Year, only the second player in program history to receive the honor. Eliana Hanna and Amber Edmonds were named UAA First Team Doubles. Eleanor Archer, Karen Gao, and Eliana Hanna were all named UAA Second Team Singles, while Amber Edmonds picked up a UAA Honorable Mention in Singles and Gao/Archer earned UAA Second Team Doubles. The team’s success continued in the fall of 2024, with Caitlin Bui and Eleanor Archer reaching the ITA Central Regional final to advance to the ITA Cup. WashU has hosted the fall ITA Regionals twice in Madara's time. In 2023, Amber Edmonds and Eliana Hanna reached the doubles semifinal and Edmonds won the singles backdraw. In 2022, Karen Gao reached the singles semifinal and Gao/Eliana Hanna reached the doubles semifinal. In the classroom, the Bears have earned ITA Team Academic Awards each year with numerous student-athletes earning ITA Scholar-Athlete honors. In 2021, Ally Persky earned the Elite 90 Award - an award that is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships. While at Grinnell, Madara held a 138-43 overall record (63-21 women, 75-22 men) and was named the Midwest Conference (MWC) Coach of the Year five times after leading her squads to six MWC team championships and 33 individual titles. Her teams earned four trips to the NCAA Division III Tennis Championships and advanced to the NCAA Second Round three times. Madara served as the assistant coach for women’s tennis at Washington and Lee University from 2015-16 and guided two individuals to the NCAA tournament where one earned All-America honors. As the women’s tennis assistant coach at WashU (2013-15), the team earned a No. 8 national ranking in 2014 and No. 13 ranking the following season. She helped three players to All-America honors. As a player for the Bears from 2009-13, Madara finished with 98 singles and doubles wins and propelled her team to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second time in school history in 2013. A team captain, Madara was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete and a University Athletic Association selection while earning a spot on the league’s Presidents Council Scholar-Athlete team. Madara earned two degrees from WashU, including a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2013 and master’s degree in social work with a mental health concentration in 2015. Updated July 2025

Ray Williams
Associate Head Coach
Ray Williams was announced as the interim assistant track and field coach at WashU on July 29, 2022 and elevated to associate head coach on August 1, 2023. Under the guidance of Williams, the WashU women’s track and field team earned the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Program of the Year award in 2023 and 2024 and played a crucial role in the 2024 outdoor national title. The historic 2024 season was capped off with four NCAA individual titiles: Emma Kelley (400m, 800m), 4x400 relay (Kylie Spytek, Danielle Schultz, Cate Christopher, Emma Kelley), and Yasmin Ruff (pole vault.) In his time with the Bears, eight women and three men have earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-America honors. In 2012, he was appointed Secretary of the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Additionally, he was honored with The James P. Lyke African American Male Image Award (2012) by the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary. Williams came to WashU following a brief stint at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, where he served as the assistant women’s cross country and track and field coach. Prior to his time at UNLV, Williams was an assistant men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach at Texas State University. He also served as a facilitator for student-athlete development and diversity and inclusion, maintained the majority of the team’s total operating budget and served as the meet director for all home meets. Williams began his coaching career at the University of Chicago in 1997 and has since had stops at Western Michigan University, the University of Detroit-Mercy, Marquette University, Grand Valley State University, the University of Mississippi, Lincoln University, Texas State and UNLV. The Chicago native graduated from North Central College in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in urban sociology and later earned his master's degree in education leadership at Grand Valley State University in 2009. During his undergraduate years at North Central, Williams was a NCAA Division III All-American in the 110-meter hurdles, team captain, three-time CCIW Conference Champion and held both the school and conference records in 110-meter hurdles. He has a daughter Micah, two sons, Daniel and Kamran, and is married to Danyual. Updated July 2025

Stephen Fleagle
Assistant Coach
Stephen Fleagle was named the newest full-time assistant coach for the Bears on October 14, 2024. Fleagle came to WashU with a multitude of collegiate track and field coaching experiences, most recently serving as an assistant coach at Tufts University from September 2021 to June 2024. With the Jumbos, Fleagle oversaw year-round training for the long jump, triple jump and high jump and developed year-round speed and power training for pole vaulters. Additionally, he wrote year-round weight training for speed and power events, developed/trained throwers for mechanics and season plyometrics and organized on-campus and overnight recruiting visits. Fleagle was also engaged in meet management as well as alumni engagement and served as the curator for Gantcher Family Sports and Convocation Center, the indoor track and field and tennis facility on campus. Prior to that, from September 2019 to September 2021, Fleagle served as the assistant men's and women's pole vault coach at Boston University. There, he oversaw training for all pole vaulters, recruited prospective athletes and prepared for home meets. Fleagle served as the head coach of men's and women's track and field at Luther College from August 2018 to September 2019. In his year there, he had more than 25 recruits, managed three full-time staff and one part-time coach, managed the budget, fundraising and alumni engagement, oversaw the training for the sprints, hurdles, javelin, multis and pole vault and was the meet manager for home events and local high school meets. From September 2012 to July 2018, Fleagle was an assistant coach at fellow UAA school the University of Chicago. During his time in the Windy City, he recruited for jumps, sprints and multis, served as the strength coach for distance runners, trained jumps, short sprints, hurdles and combined events and served as the meet manager for the timing system. Fleagle began his track and field coaching career as a graduate assistant for women's track and field at North Central, serving in that role from August 2010 to June 2012. In the role, he recruited 55 women over two years, coordinated prospective student-athlete campus visits, served as the strength coach for the women's team, did meet management for cross country, indoor and outdoor meets and helped coordinate community service opportunities. Fleagle has an abundance of awards to his name, including the 2024 and 2022 USTFCCCA Men's Outdoor East Regional Assistant Coach of the Year, the 2023 USTFCCCA Women's Indoor East Regional Assistant Coach of the Year and 2022 USTFCCCA Women's Outdoor East Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. He was part of the 2022 and 2023 NESCAC Men's Coaching Staff of the Year. Additionally, Fleagle was part of the 2018 UAA Indoor Women's Coaching Staff of the Year, the 2015 UAA Indoor and Outdoor Women's Coaching Staff of the year and the 2014 Indoor Women's Coaching Staff of the Year. He was also part of the 2013 UAA Cross Country Coaching Staff of the Year as well as the 2010-11 CCIW Women's Coaching Staff of the Year for cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. Fleagle holds the following certifications: Level 1 USATF Track and Field Coach, USTFCCCA Jumping Event Specialist, USTFCCCA Strength and Conditioning Specialist, USTFCCCA Injury Management for the Track and Field Coach and USTFCCCA Masters Pole Vault. He is also a certified personal trainer. Fleagle holds a bachelor's degree in exercise science and a master's degree in sports leadership from North Central. As an undergraduate at NCC, Fleagle participated in track and field and men's soccer. Updated July 2025
