Clint Galyean

Head Coach

Considered one of the up-and-coming stars in coaching, Clint Galyean was named men's head basketball coach at Wayland Baptist University prior to the 2021-22 season.   A native West Texan, Galyean (Gal-yuhn) grew up in Eastland, Texas, and went on to attend Angelo State University. He was recruited to play basketball at ASU under current University of Texas coach Chris Beard, but a couple of knee surgeries cut short his playing career. Galyean switched gears and became a student assistant coach and later graduate assistant coach at Angelo State, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology. He later earned a Master's from ASU in coaching, sport, recreation and fitness management.   As a graduate assistant at ASU from 2015-17, Galyean helped the NCAA Division II Rams to a two-year record of 42-19 and an appearance in the Sweet 16.   Galyean became assistant men's basketball coach at Central Baptist College in Conway, Ark., in 2017, helping the program to a 21-9 record, its first-ever top 25 ranking, and its first appearance in the NAIA National Championships. The very next season Galyean was elevated to head coach, and for the next three years guided the Mustangs to the American Midwest Conference regular-season or tournament championship and three more national tournament appearances.   His CBC teams were ranked as high as No. 18 in the country and compiled an overall win-loss record of 63-27, a winning percentage of .700. He recruited and developed six NAIA All-Americans in four years, as well as 15 all-conference players and eight academic all-conference players. In his first season at Wayland, Galyean guided the Pioneers to the championship game of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, beating No. 10 USAO in the semifinals before falling by two points in the finals to No. 24 SAGU. Wayland finished with a 19-13 record, including 13-9 in the SAC.   Galyean's father, Doug, is considered a legend in the high school basketball ranks in West Texas, having coached for the past 35-plus years, mostly at Eastland High School. Doug Galyean also coached at Cisco Junior College in the early 1990s.   Clint Galyean is the 13th head coach in the 73-year history of Pioneer basketball. What Other Coaches Are Saying About Clint Galyean: "Coach Galyean is a rising star in the college basketball coaching profession. His teams are always well prepared and play hard, and they know how to win. Coach Galyean is the perfect fit and person to lead the Pioneer basketball team." ~ Mark Adams, Head Men's Basketball Coach, Texas Tech "Congratulations to Wayland Baptist on the hiring of Clint Galyean as head men's basketball coach. Clint knows how to win and he does it with integrity and class. He will embrace and execute the mission of WBU with his teams. As a player, Clint played hard and was the ultimate team player. His teams do the same. He is one of the rising stars in our business. I am proud of my association and relationship with Clint. WBU and the community of Plainview will share this pride very soon. Home run hire." ~ Chris Beard, Head Men's Basketball Coach, University of Texas "Clint Galyean is a tremendous person and has proven to be a heck of a basketball coach! Most people don't understand what he did at Central Baptist, as there aren't many coaches at any level that could take that program to three straight NAIA National Tournaments. I'm looking forward to seeing the elite program he will build at Wayland Baptist." ~ Chris Wright, Head Men's Basketball Coach, Talladega College  (Ala.)
