Head Coach
Leo Mayo enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Wesleyan men's and women's cross country programs in 2025. He is also an assistant coach for the Wesleyan track & field programs. The 2024 campaign was a landmark season for Mayo and the two cross country programs as both the men's and women's teams qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships. That marked the first time in school history that both the men's and women's teams qualified for the NCAA Championships in the same season. The men made their fourth all-time NCAA appearance (first since 2015) while the women qualified for the fifth time (first since 2019). At the NCAA Championships, the men finished 23rd out of 32 while the women placed 24th out of 32 with Stephanie Ager '26 placing 20th overall, earning All-American honors for the first time while becoming the sixth Cardinal woman to earn All-American honors (first since 2009). In each of his first three competitive (non-COVID) seasons at Wesleyan, the women's cross country team has seen an individual qualify for the NCAA Championships as Miranda Graves '23 competed in 2021 and Stephanie Ager '26 earned a spot as a first-year in 2022 and sophomore in 2023. The Cardinal women have placed Top 10 at the NCAA Mideast Regional in each of his first three seasons at Wesleyan while the men placed 8th at the 2023 NESCAC Championship and 7th at the 2023 NCAA Mideast Regional, both of which are the highest-finish at each respective meet since 2015. Mayo brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and accolades to Wesleyan. He was hired as the first-ever head coach of the American International College (AIC) men's and women's cross country and track & field teams in August 2006 and has served in that role for 15 seasons. On May 8, 2021, his women's track & field squad claimed its first-ever Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Championship. During his time at AIC, Mayo led the cross country programs to four Northeast-10 Conference titles (2014-16, 2019), two NE-10 indoor track & field championships (2015-16), and two NE-10 outdoor track & field crowns (2016, 2021). He also coached five national champions (four in track, one in cross country); one Division II Cross Country National Athlete of the Year; 10 NE-10 Cross Country Male Athletes of the Year; four NE-10 Cross Country Female Athletes of the Year; and a total of 120 Division II All-Americans (107 in track, 13 in cross country). Additionally, Mayo has been named the NE-10 Cross Country Coach of the Year four times; the USTFCCCA East Region Cross Country Coach of the Year twice; the NE-10 Indoor Track Coach of the Year three times; the USTFCCCA East Region Indoor Coach of the Year three times; the NE-10 Outdoor Track Coach of the Year once; and the USTFCCCA East Region Outdoor Track Coach of the Year twice. Prior to his tenure at AIC, Mayo served as the head cross country coach/assistant track coach at Bloomfield High School. He was also a physical/health education teacher for six years at the elementary school and middle school levels. Mayo was an excellent athlete as well and competed on the cross country and track & field teams at Central Connecticut State University from 1997 to 2002. He was a two-time Northeast Conference All-Conference Team selection and was named All-IC4A Country in 2001. Mayo also set the school record in the indoor and outdoor 3,000m. Mayo received his Bachelor of Science in Education at CCSU in 2002 and a Master of Education at AIC in 2011. He has served on the USTFCCCA Division II Cross Country Executive Committee since 2015 and was on the Northeast-10 Conference Cross Country Chair from 2014 to 2019. Mayo is USATF Level 1 and Level 2 certified.

John Crooke
Assistant Coach
Crooke enters his 17th season as head mens and womens cross country coach at Wesleyan University heading into the 2016 campaign. Under his guidance, both the mens and womens teams have established themselves in regional and national rankings, and consistently ranked among the top-15 in New England. Wesleyan's women have qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship as a team three times under Crooke (2002, 2004, 2009) with its most recent visit in 2009 resulting in a 14th-place finish. The men's team has qualified for three national championship berths as well (2005, 2006, 2015) and finished 11th in their most recent appearance. Individually, the Cardinals have had 17 NCAA qualifiers between the men's and women's teams, with the most recent being All-American Bryan Marsh '13 in 2012. Marsh is one of nine Wesleyan All-Americans since 2000.

Scott Bushey
Assistant Coach
Scott Bushey enters his ninth year at Wesleyan in the 2025-26 academic year. After serving as the athletic operations and fitness coordinator for five years, Bushey was promoted to senior assistant athletic director for internal operations and wellness in 2022. Bushey has been a jack-of-all-trades within the department as he started as an assistant cross country coach and assistant to the deputy athletic director in his first year in 2017-18. He was then promoted to athletic operations and fitness coordinator in his second year. In 2020-21, Bushey served as the interim head cross country coach as well as an assistant track and field coach. He returned to duties as athletic operations and fitness coordinator in 2021-22 and was promoted to senior assistant athletic director for internal operations and wellness in 2022-23. Among his other duties at Wesleyan, Bushey has become heavily involved in the student development programming, specifically related to mental health as he is the Hope Happens Here advisor, facilitates Take Flight (first-year student-athlete experience) and schedules guest speakers. In addition, he also manages the Wesleyan faculty/staff wellness program, most notably the year-round adult fitness program. His list of duties continues on as he supervised game management staff, communicating game day information to visiting coaches and officials. Bushey has also served as tournament director of the 2019 NCAA Div. III Tennis Regional Tournament and assisted in the planning and overseeing of the 2019 NESCAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships. Prior to Wesleyan, Bushey held a variety of roles including an intern with the Springfield Armor (2013), team attendant with the Connecticut Sun (2007-14), tournament operations intern with Cal Ripken Baseball (2015) and brand ambassador supervisor for Gatorade in the Northeast Volleyball Championship in Hartford (2015-16). Bushey also coached the North East Basketball Club in the AAU circuit from 2012-14 while he was a head coach at Nike Track & Field Camp in Windsor, CT in the summer of 2018. While pursuing his master’s degree at Springfield, Bushey was an assistant coach with both the cross country and track & field programs for two years (2015-17). He assisted with the day-to-day operations of the program, including planning and implementing practices while also assisting in the recruiting of prospective student-athletes. In the final semester of his graduate years at Springfield, Bushey took an internship with Eastern Connecticut State University that saw him assist in the school’s hosting of the NCAA Div. III Baseball Regional Tournament. A few months later, Bushey took an internship with the business operations department within athletics at American International College for the 2017 spring season. It was here where he supported the assistant athletic director for business operations with analyzing, processing and reviewing department financial information including transportation expenses and financial aid. Bushey was a four-year member of the cross country and track & field teams in his time at Springfield College. Bushey graduated cum laude in May 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management while he achieved a master’s in athletic administration from Springfield in 2017.
