Bryan Poore

Head Coach

Poore became Head Mens basketball coach at West Virginia StateUniversity in 1999 and has led the program to staggering heights since. His record at West VirginiaState is 280-166 overall and 292-180 at the collegiate level. Poore returned to Institute after serving three years as an assistant coach on the staff of Greg White at MarshallUniversity. Prior to that stint, Poore worked on Whites staff for five years at Archrival University of Charleston. The last year at UC, Poore served as interim head coach, while White took a one-year sabbatical as an assistant on Jim Harricks staff at UCLA. He also served as the Golden Eagles NCAA compliance coordinator. A native of Winfield, WV, Poore also worked as an assistant under Tex Williams for one year at Alderson-Broaddus, while also helping the Battlers sports information department. Additionally, he was assistant varsity and head freshman coach at Hurricane HS for two seasons. For eight years, Poore directed Greg Whites ultra-successful summer basketball camps at both UC and Marshall. He also has his own camp each summer at WVSU. The 48-year-old Poore graduated from State in 1987 with a bachelors degree in physical education, and completed work on his masters degree in physical education from Marshall University in 1994. Married to the lovely former Jennifer Stricklen they and their son Trevor and daughter Anna, reside in the Spring Hill area of South Charleston. In his spare time away from the job, Poore enjoys playing golf and watching NASCAR events. Marcus Reed

Associate Head Coach

Marcus Reed enters his seventh year as an Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at West Virginia State University in 2025-26. He interned with the Marshall University men's basketball program prior to joining the Yellow Jackets. Reed attended Riverside High School in Belle, W.Va. where he became the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,301 points. He was selected All-State Honorable Mention twice during his junior and senior years. In his senior year of high school, Reed was also named First Team All-MSAC. Furthermore, Reed starred as a wide receiver on the Riverside Warriors football team. He ranked third in the Mountain State Athletic Conference in receiving with 45 catches for 880 yards and eight touchdowns during his senior year and garnered Second Team All-MSAC honors in the process. His overall athleticism earned him an offer from Glenville State College where he signed to play football at the NCAA Division II level. After one year at Glenville State, Reed decided to shift his focus towards academics and transferred to Marshall to study Sport Management. He famously competed in a one-on-one game against former Duke standout and NBA journeyman Chris Duhon at 'Rock the Rec' after being chosen by his peers as the best basketball player among them. Reed's performance did not go unnoticed as he later walked on to the Thundering Herd men's basketball team. Reed graduated from Marshall with a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management in May of 2017 with a 3.3 grade point average. He continued his studies at Marshall post-graduation, earning a Master of Science in Sports Administration by May of 2019 with a 3.91 GPA. Reed currently resides in Charleston with his wife Maria.
