Courtney Michalka
Head Coach
Courtney Michalka was named Head Coach of the Western Michigan University Cheerleading program in July 2021, following her role as Assistant Coach since 2017. In her time as assistant coach, Michalka played a pivotal role in the team’s development, and since taking over in 2021, she has expanded the program to twice its original size. With a focus on fostering talent and promoting growth, she has enhanced recruiting efforts and strengthened relationships with cheerleading programs both within Michigan and across the country. Michalka was proud to be a part of the team’s historic appearance in the All-Girl Game Day Division at the 2024 UCA National Cheerleading Competition. This marked a significant milestone for the program under her leadership. Before her coaching career, Michalka was a competitive gymnast, eventually transitioning to cheerleading where she competed at the national level as a Level 6 All-Girl cheerleader from 2007 to 2009. During that time, she earned a national championship title and secured a bid to the prestigious World Championship competition. As a student-athlete at WMU from 2009 to 2012, Michalka was a key member of the Co-ed Cheer Team and served as team captain during her senior year. Beyond her work at WMU, Michalka has extensive experience in cheerleading and gymnastics coaching, including 15 years coaching gymnastics and high school cheerleading during her college years. She holds a certification as a USA Cheer coach, formerly known as AACCA, which attests to her deep expertise and commitment to the sport. In addition to her role as head coach, Michalka works full-time as the Administrator for the Van Buren County Specialty Courts. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice & Sociology from Western Michigan University. Courtney and her husband, Robbie Michalka, were married in 2015 and are the proud parents of their daughter, Eva, and son, Kolson.
