Cheng joined the Mustangs as the womens basketball head coach beginning in the 2011-12 season following a successful reign as head coach with the University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team for the previous ten seasons.  Holding a record of 120-91 during his time with the Vikes, he led his squad to a CIS Championship in 2003 and was named CIS and Canada West Coach of the Year in 2010. Prior to his time as head coach in Victoria, he spent five seasons as the Vikes assistant coach under Kathy Shields, winning the CIS Championship in both 1998 and 2000.
