Jessica Bergen
Coach
Bergen begins her fourth season as head coach of the Westfield State University field hockey team. She led the program to the regular-season MASCAC Championship in 2014, and in 2012 coached the Owls to an 11-7 record, one win shy of the school record for wins in a season. In her time at Westfield, the Owls have excelled both on the field and in the classroom. The program has placed 32 members on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National All-Academic Squad, earned three NFHCA National Academic Team Honors, had two student athletes named as NFHCA Scholars of Distinction. Forty-six players have been named to the MASCAC All-Academic Team, and five players have earned Little East Conference All-Star selections during her tenure. A firm believer in the student-athlete, when she is not on the field, Bergen teaches as an adjunct faculty member in the Movement Science, Sport & Leisure Studies Department at Westfield State. Bergen is a USA field hockey Level II accredited coach, and has run a USA Field Hockey Futures site since 2014. She has also been a head coach and site coordinator for HTC Field Hockey Club since 2013, after leaving her post as a head coach and administrator of Nomads Field Hockey Club. Bergen is a 2008 graduate of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where she was a letter winner for four nationally ranked teams, participated in four Liberty League Championships, and was part of a program that hosted two NCAA regional matches advancing to the second round. Bergen grew up in Wells, Vt., and attended high school just across the border in Granville, N.Y where she was a two-year captain, MVP, and helped her team to the C-CC title game. An active participant in the USA Field Hockey Futures Program, Bergen attended a Level I site and was selected to participate in two National Futures Tournaments. Bergen earned a master of science in exercise science with a concentration in sport and exercise psychology at Springfield College, where she served as an assistant field hockey coach and teaching fellow. After her time at Springfield, Bergen came to Westfield State from nearby Southwick High School, where she served a two-year stint as head coach, turning the team around from 0-17-1 to just shy of a tournament bid at 4-8-5. Jessica is enthusiastic, passionate and energetic, said Westfield Athletics Director Richard Lenfest at the time of her hiring. We are pleased to have her as our coach.
