Dan Ribbens
Assistant Coach
Ribbens served as the Warriors mens soccer team captain for two seasons, during which time he was the teams MVP. In 1976, he became the programs sixth player to be named an NAIA All-American. "It is pure joy to be able to coach at Westmont," said Ribbens. "Having been involved with the womens soccer program at its inception in the 70s, I can really appreciate the quality of the players and coaches that are currently in the program. Hopefully, as the season progresses, I can contribute something to the development of each player both on and off the pitch. This program is really all about how to maximize every players experience as a Westmont soccer player and win some games along the way." While finishing up his BA in political science in 1977, Ribbens played a year of professional soccer for the now defunct Santa Barbara Condors of the American Soccer League. In the summer of 1979, Ribbens traveled to Africa to play for "Adventures in Education". The team was cosponsored by the State Department and coached by Westmonts Russ Carr. During the early 90s, Ribbens was instrumental in starting the Football Club of Santa Barbara, which has since merged with the Santa Barbara Soccer Club. He has coached youth club soccer teams from Under-11 to Under-19 for more than a decade. Since 1977, Ribbens has been the owner/operator of Ribbens Construction which specializes in custom residential homes. Ribbens and his wife Karen (Westmont 78) have two sons, Andy (Westmont 02) and Erick. Katie Tunin joined the Westmont Womens Soccer coaching staff in the fall of 2010. Tunin serves as the teams goalkeeper coach. "My approach to being a goalkeeper coach is very technical," said Tunin. "I dont want my keepers to be showy but rather to make saves look easy. Our main focus to effective goalkeeping is consistency, quick and efficient footwork, solid catching and diving technique, and clear communication." Tunin was a NCAA Division I goalkeeper at Northern Arizona where she holds the teams season record for fewest goals allowed in a season (11 in 2000). She ranks second for the Lumberjacks in career goals allowed at 1.158. After serving at her alma mater as an assistant coach from 2002-04 while earning a masters in secondary education, Tunin began coaching at both the club and high school level. From 2006 through 2008, Tunin taught history at Calabasas High School and served as the girls soccer head coach. In 2008, Tunin began working as the head coach at Ventura High School while also serving as a middle school youth paster at Ventura Missionary Church in Ventura. She continues to serve in both of those capacities today. "I am so blessed to be part of the Westmont coaching staff.," said Tunin. "Being part of the womens soccer team is like my mountain top experience. I am so filled up and encouraged by the players and coaches at Westmont. I leave after practice and games ready to pour out into the lives of others. Being part of this program has given me a glimpse into the way the church is supposed to operate, a genuine authentic community where each person loves and sharpens each other." New to the coaching staff for the 2015 season is Cole Schmit, a 2014 graduate of California Baptist. A three-year starter for the Lancers, Schmit played under two Westmont alumni head coach Ryan Jorden (95) and assistant coach Gregg Schroeder (03). After graduating from California Baptist, Schmit followed Jorden to the University of the Pacific where he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2014-15 season. "I hope to bring the experiecne that I have developed under coaches Jorden and Schroeder. They created in me a solid foundation to become a good player, a good student-athlete and to become a man of God. Ultimately, I would like to bring to the table my experience and knowledge of the game and also share my faith and help the student-athletes develop as students, as students of the game and in their relationship with God. " Schmit, a center-midfielder, was honored three times as an All-PacWest selection. He was also named NCCAA All-American in 2012 and was a part of back-to-back NCCAA National Championship teams in 2011 and 2012. Schmit served as captain of the 2013 team and was three times recognized as a member of the PacWest All-Academic Team. During the summer of 2013, Schmit played with the Southern California Seahorses, a Premier Development League team.
