Barry Doty

Head Coach

Doty joined the athletics staff in August of 2002. Coach Doty is a PGA Golf Professional and serves as the William Woods men and women's head golf coach. Coach Doty has a very impressive resume, including coaching 15 teams to NAIA National Championship appearances, having seven NAIA National top 10 finishes which are the only top 10 in WWU history and he holds the most wins in William Woods University with 1,704 wins under his belt. He has also coached in 18 National Championships, with 15 teams advancing and three times going with individuals. Doty has coached 23 NAIA All-Americans and has the ninth highest NAIA Championship team finishes in WWU history (3 rd , 4 th , 4th, 6 th , 8 th , 9 th , 9 th , 12 th , 12 th ) During his time with WWU, his teams have beaten opponents by over 80,000 strokes, had seven teams finish ranked in the NAIA Top 10, 15 teams ranked in the Top 20 and 17 teams rank in the Top 25. The womens golf team has had much success under the tutelage of Doty, as they have compiled 949 wins, became the first team in WWU history to have a top 10 finish in an NAIA Championship Sanctioned Sport (8 th place), ranked in the top 20 in every NAIA Poll the last 10 years, havent lost to an unranked NAIA team in over 10 years, had the highest ranking in WWU history for an NAIA National Championship Womens Sport (2012; 4 th , 2014, 4 th ) and went undefeated in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) for over a decade. The mens team, meanwhile, has totaled 765 wins, collected its first win in WWU history over a BCS Conference School (Rutgers, 2012), its first Division I Tournament win came at the Siena Homewood Suites Invitational in 2012, had the highest ranking in WWU history for an NAIA National Championship mens sport (3 rd , 2014) and have earned two Phil Mickelson award winners which is given to the top freshman in the country (Julian Taylor, 2012; Billy McKenzie, 2014). The mens and womens teams have won many NCAA Division II Tournaments against Nationally ranked Division II teams, they have won the Missouri Intercollegiate Championship three times (2011, 2012, 2013) and have the first Golfstat Cup Winner in school history (Julian Taylor, 2012-13). Just this past season, his mens and womens golf programs have had plenty of success. To start, the womens golf team was ranked No. 1 in the country at least once in the Golfstat ranking, finished the year 86-8, beat its opponents by a combined 5,783 strokes and broke every WWU team and individual scoring record. The team went 7-1 against NCAA Division I teams and beat them by a combined 107 strokes, while Jamie Palermo was the Long Drive Champion at the NAIA Womens National Championship. The mens team finished with a record of 120-5-1 and beat its opponents by an astounding 5,783 strokes. The team made golf history with two players making a double-eagle (albatross), on the same hole during the same round, while like the women, the men broke every WWU team and individual scoring record. They also ranked in the top 50 in the country in every scoring category and the No. 2 ranking in the NAIA Top 25 Poll was the highest ranking ever for a WWU Athletic team in an NAIA Championship Sport. Combined together, the squads went 206-13-1 on the year and defeated its opponents by a combined 12,449 strokes. They had 13 players named to the All-AMC team, eight NAIA All-Americans, five players named NAIA National Players of the Week, two AMC Players of the Year, two conference titles, four Golf Coaches Association PING NAIA All-Americans, four NAIA Scholar-Athletes and coach Doty picked up two AMC Coach of the Year awards. Coach Dotys womens team has also had success outside the golf course, as during the 2011 and 2012 seasons, they have had the William Woods University highest athletics department grade point average and have gotten the most NAIA Scholar-Athletes in the country in 2011 and 2012. Dotys womens team holds the highest ranking for a female sport at #4 in 2012, and Golfstat ranked the womens freshman class #1 in the country twice (2004, 2012). In his tenure here at William Woods, Barry Doty, holds plenty of WWU records including most conference and region championships, has coached every mens and womens individual scoring record holder in WWU golf history, most all-conference award winners, most conference/region freshman of the year award winners and has 20 conference, region or unaffiliated Coach of the Year awards. Doty has also spent six years at the Moberly Country Club where he was the General Manager/CEO and the PGA Head Golf Professional. From 1990 to 1996, Coach Doty was the Assistant PGA Professional at the Country Club of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., and at Sedalia, Mo., Country Club. Doty is a graduate of Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia, Mo., and the PGA of America Business School. Some of Coach Doty's accomplishments include; being a member of the PGA of America, becoming a Chrysler National Long Drive Qualifier for two years, free agent tryouts with the Washington Redskins and the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League and shooting his career best round of 63 at the Bonneville Country Club in 1989. Barry and his wife Diana reside in Columbia, Mo.

Aaron Murphy

Head Coach

Start Date: August 2022 Murphy centers his life around golf. He has played in 125 events on various professional tours with two wins and has done individual lessons for the past 10 years. In 2024-25, Murphy earned AMC Men's Golf Coach of the Year, his men's team won the AMC Championship, nine team tournament titles and placed 14th in the NAIA National Championships and his men's players received AMC Freshman of the Year and a conference-best nine All-AMC honorees (three first-team, two second-team and four honorable mention). WWU's women's team had two top-three team finishes and two All-AMC selections (two honorable mention) in 24-25.  In the Owls' first season in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (2025-26), Murphy led the Woods to nine team titles and a fourth place finish in the Heart Championship on the men's side. The team also saw an individual qualifier for the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship in Spencer Worley, who is surely set to be inducted into the William Woods Athletics Hall of Fame as one of the most decorated men's golfers in the program's storied history. In women's golf, the program grew substantially from a year prior, finishing top five in every tournament they played. The young Owls team looks to grow in their second year in the Heart, behind strong depth on both sides.    Prior to his time at The Woods, Murphy served as the Jefferson City High School boy's and girl's golf head coach in 2022.   In between his professional career, he returned to his alma mater to assist the Lincoln University (Mo.) Blue Tigers for one year (2016-17).   Prior to LU, he spent three years as the New Bloomfield High School boy's and girl's golf head coach.   His impressive four-year collegiate career (2004-09) led him to be the first golfer inducted into the Lincoln University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015. He was named the 2008-09 Heartland Conference Player of the Year and was a two-time All-Heartland Conference First Team selection. He graduated in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in business.

Bobby Mayer

Assistant Coach

Mayer is entering his second season as a graduate assistant coach for the mens golf team. Mayer is a 2012 alum of William Woods where he played golf and won two varsity letters, finished second at the William Woods Spring Invitational in 2011 and was named American Midwest Conference Golfer of the Month. Mayer, a St. Louis, Mo., graduated from Marquette High School, where he was a four time All-Conference in golf, three time All-District, three time state golf participant and finished 16 th in state his senior year. Bobby was also a two year basketball letter winner and his team qualified for state his junior year at Marquette. Bobby is the son of Bob and Diane Mayer.

J.D. Nash

Assistant Coach

Nash (J.D.) is entering his first season as an assistant coach on the mens golf team. Nash lettered four years here at William Woods, as he won multiple tournaments including the winner of the 2012 Sienna University Homewood Suites Invitational in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Other accolades for Nash are he made All-Conference three years in golf, including conference champion in his junior year, made the Ping North All-Region Team, competed in four National Championships, with his highest finish being in a tie for 11 th . Also, in his final year as an Owl, he made All-American. Jared graduated with a degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and is currently working on his Masters in Business Administration. He was a member of the honor society Order of Omega and Tri Beta. Jared s hometown is Newburg, Mo., and he is the son of Roger and Kim Nash.
