Corey Iacofano
Head Coach
Iacofano is in his fourth year as Wingate University head mens golf coach. In 2014, Iacofano mentored Bulldog graduate student Benedict Gebhardt (Wiesbaden, Germany) as he earned a spot in the NCAA Southeast Regional as an individual. A first team All-South Atlantic Conference selection, Gebhardt won three of his last five 2013-14 tournaments. Gebhardt was the medalist at the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference mens golf tournament April 13-15. He posted a three-round total of 216 (77-67-72) to take the tournament crown by 11 strokes. On March 24, Gebhardt took the top spot in the 14th annual J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate tournament at the National Golf Club in Pinehurst. Gebhardt finished the two-day, 36-hole event with a two-over-par 146. He led the tournament with 27 pars. Wingates team finished second in the 2014 SAC tournament, missing an NCAA tournament bid by two strokes. In 2013, Iacofano helped senior Brian Denton (13, Wendell, N.C.) qualify for the Southeast Regional as an individual. A two-time All-SAC first team performer, Denton was the medalist at the 13th annual J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate tournament. In 2012, Iacofano led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament and their first-ever South Atlantic Conference tournament championship. He was also named SAC Coach of the Year for his efforts. Wingate finished 17th in the 2012 NCAA South/Southeast Regionals during the teams first-ever NCAA regional appearance. Iacofano previously served as graduate assistant for the Wingate mens and womens golf programs. He was closely involved in the day-to-day aspects of both golf programs, including recruiting and player development. The Painesville, Ohio native was a four-year letter winner for the Bulldogs. As a WU senior, Iacofano was named All-Tournament in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship. He also received the prestigious J. Ralph Hargett Spirit of the Game Award, presented by the leagues head coaches. The same season, he won the 2008 J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate, en route to leading the Dogs to the tournament title. Iacofano received Wingates MVP award his senior year. Wingate University vice-president and director of athletics : I am very proud of Corey. He will have this great opportunity to lead the mens golf program. He was a fine golfer at Wingate and excelled as a graduate assistant. I have full confidence in Dr. Surratts judgment in giving Corey these additional responsibilities. His passion for Wingate University will result in positive results for the mens golf program. Wingate University Director of Golf : I am very excited Corey is assuming the leadership of the mens golf team. He is dedicated to Wingate University and has all the tools for success at coaching. Corey served exceptionally well as the graduate assistant for two years; I was able to shift a large share of responsibilities to him last year. In every case, he handled himself and the tasks well. Several of the SAC coaches have commented positively on Coreys potential for this position, so his promotion will not be a surprise to them. He is popular, but respected by the current team members, so I think the transition will be seamless in every respect. I will look forward to giving overall direction to Wingate golf and investing more time in the womens program for a while longer. We have our strongest class of freshman golfers entering this fallwhile we will miss those graduating seniors, both programs should flourish next year. Wingate University head mens golf coach : To be a head coach wasnt really one of my goals when I initially took the graduate assistant position (at Wingate); however, once I started the positionand Coach Surratt gave me more responsibility, I knew what I wanted to work towards and what I wanted my job to be in the future. Coach Surratts first year of coaching was my first year as a player. I have gained much respect for him, both as a coach and as a boss over the years. He has allowed me a great opportunity to do something I love doing. In the future, I plan to keep improving the team. If we continually improve in practice and tournaments every single day, then we will eventually reach our goals.
