Cid Carvalho
Head Coach
Carvalho has completed 30 years as Winthrop's tennis head coach,including 25 as both the men's and women's coach and the last five as coach of the women's team only. The duties of the two positions were divided on July 1, 2011. A 1981 Winthrop graduate, Carvalho received a degree in physical education before earning his masters degree in 1989. A native of São Paulo, Brazil, Carvalho has posted a combined mens and womens record of 613-375. His record as women's head coach only over the past five years stands at 83-44 while overall in 30 years is 391-247. He has enjoyed a high level of success guiding the womens program to 18 Big South Conference championships and three runners-up finishes, and the mens program to five titles and 11 runners-up spots. The women have been regular season champions 18 times in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016, and hav earned 14 NCAA Tournament bids in the last 17 years. The women's 14 NCAA appearances are for the years 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016. His men's teams participated in the NCAA regionals in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Under Carvalho, the men's program captured eight regular season championships in 1997, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2011. He has been voted Big South Conference women's Coach of the Year 10 times (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2013), and men's Coach of the Year three times (1997, 2002, and 2004). Carvalho was awarded the title of "High Performance Coach" by the USTAs Player Development Program in 2000. He has many years of teaching experience and has served as tennis director of the City of Rock Hill from 1983 through 1997. He is a member of the U.S. Professional Tennis Registry, the South Carolina Professional Tennis Association and the United States Professional Tennis Association. He is a past member of the NCAA Division I Regional Advisory Committee where he served for eight years. As a college player, Carvalho held the top flight for Winthrop. He has also been ranked in the top spot in doubles and mixed doubles in South Carolina. Carvalho and his wife Sherri are the parents of a son, Joseph, and a daughter, Gabriela, both of whom are graduates and former tennis players at the University of the South.
