Doug Steiner
Assistant Coach
Steiner has won eight conference championships, as well as coached 10 Academic All-Americans, 31 all-conference performers, 51 medalists and six conference Rookie of the Year honorees. A seven-time conference Coach of the Year, his teams have won 33 tournaments and qualified for the NCAA Tournament five times (2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006) in addition to sending six players to the event as individuals. A model of consistency in the past decade-plus, the XU men's golf program has had at least an individual compete at the NCAA Tournament in four of the past five seasons and 11 of the past 15 years. In addition to collegiate success, Steiner has helped groom future professionals. Four Xavier alums are currently playing on pro tours, including Jason Kokrak (PGA), Andy Pope (Web.com), Sebastian MacClean (Latinoamérica) and Herbert Day (Latinoamérica). The Musketeers have captured eight conference titles (four Atlantic 10, four Midwestern Collegiate Conference) under Steiner, including four straight MCC titles from 1990-93. The growth of the Xavier golf program was recognized in the summer of 2007 when Golf Digest Magazine selected it as the 38th-best in the nation using a mathematical ranking that took into account several factors, including the team's scoring average, player development, academics, climate, facility and coaching staff. Steiner began his career at Xavier during the 1988-89 season and has been a full-time staff member since being named XU's first Director of Golf in 2001. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1983 from Capital University, was a four-time all-conference selection as a member of Capital's varsity golf team. Steiner also made three NCAA Tournament appearances while helping the team win two Ohio Athletic Conference Championships. Steiner earned his teacher's certification in marketing education from Ohio State. Prior to joining the Xavier staff full-time, he taught sports marketing at Winton Woods High School in Cincinnati. Steiner and his wife, Diane, live in Hamilton and have three children: Lindsay, who played on the XU women's golf team from 2006-2010, Doug, a 2012 grad and former XU golfer, and Rachel, a graduate of Wittenberg and a former member of its women's golf team.
